Dearly beloved family & friends of Steve Varnai , we extend our deepest sympathy in the loss of such a fine, humble, honest, and dedicated man. He built the corner stone of the West Island with Yagel bagel. I was privilege to become one of his long term employees and enjoyed the positive energy he instilled within the bakery. While working during the high holidays , Steve was always present to ensure everything was running smooth and greet his customers with gratitude and compassion. His genuine smile and charismatic demeanour encouraged his employees to provide the best service possible. It was easy to work overtime with Steve steering the ship.! We had a great team and developed friendships over the years working at the bakery together.. Thank you for all the interesting conversation in Hungarian with my husband Peter, he thought you were a real gentleman, one of a kind.! Joanne , Jessie, Judy and family members please keep your fondest memories of Steve at heart , may you find strength & courage to carry on in admiration of such a wonderful person ! Sincerely, Valerey & Peter Chirke.

It was with great sadness that we heard of Steve’s passing. He was such a fine gentleman. A true mensch. Whenever we’d go in yagel he would greet me (us) with a smile, a hug and a cookie for my kids. He always asked about my family and was genuinely interested in hearing what I had to say. May your memories be of comfort to all of you.
Stephen Myerson - 21 days ago
My sincere condolences to Steve’s family. Like most people here my family and I were regulars at his store for almost 40 years. Steve and Yagel Bagel were institutions in Dollard. He was always friendly and would stop and chat for a few minutes in the store or whenever we ran into each other out on the streets in DDO. May the family know no more sorrow.

To Steve's family, I went to high school with steve and when I moved to ddo and walked into yagel bagel he instantly remembered me and we started talking. Well from then on everytime I went into the bakery, there he was with his big smile and always took time to say hello. He was really such a warm and kind man. Sending you all my deepest condolences and may all your wonderful memories sustain you at this most difficult time.

Our deepest sympathies to the family and friends. We are very sad to hear of Steve’s passing. We lived in Dollard for many years and enjoyed going to Yagel Bagel. We would frequently see him there. He was always friendly, with a beautiful smile would come to say hello. We would also see him at times at the Montreal Casino with his mom. He was a very special person and we have very fond memories of him and the tasty goodies that he was a part of creating.

We were sooo sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. As regular clients of Yagel Bagel, Steve was always friendly, welcoming and engaging. Yagel Bagel was a major part of the West Island community, with Steve at the helm. We send to his family our most sincere condolences.

Dear Family, If you lived in DDO and didn’t frequent Yagel Bagel, you surely missed out on the best bakery. Rarely was there a time you didn’t see Steve. Most often you were greeted with his beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. He always made you feel special. Even after moving into the city, I frequented the bakery on a regular basis. If only the world were made of menschen like Steve.
Frances Winterstein - 23 days ago
How very sad it is that Steve is no longer with us! He was a mainstay of DDO. Steve’s smiling face, gentle demeanor and genuine interest in the well being of his customers were always so evident. He and I spent many hours just “talking” over the years that Steve owned the now famous Yagel Bagel. We followed the growth of his beloved daughter and my sons with a keen interest. The Yagel Bagel extended family has lost a very dear friend. My sincere condolences to the entire family.

To the Varnai family my deepest condolences on the loss of Steven. My first job was at Yagel Bagel over 20 years ago. I have very fond memories at working at the bakery and getting to know Steve. I do remember him giving the ‘younger employees’ life advice and what he did to be successful in business. I also remember him cutting old fashion smoked meat after we cleaned the machines and 10 minutes before we closed. We all chuckled but he was a good guy so we didn’t mind cleaning the machines again.

I would like to extend my condolences to the family. May all the memories easy your pain and sorrow. I know Steve all the way back to Northmount High where I was one year ahead of him. We lost touch and then I saw him at Yagel Bagel where we caught up. He had just opened the store and my family and I just bought a house in DDO. He confided in me that things were slow and he didn't think he made a good move. I told him if he could stay afloat for 6 months to a year things would turn around. That DDO was a growing community and he had to build his name and loyalty. For years he would greet me with his pipe in mouth and always remind me that it was the best advice anybody gave him. Then he would take off because I would give him my piece of mind after a Bills loss. Needless to say he endured my wrath for many years especially after 4 consecutive Super Bowl losses. Due to his health I never saw him but always asked about him whenever I went in the bakery and very saddened about him moving on . Steve ,rest in peace and enjoy the Bills games smoking your pipe and know ,that coincidentally, last nights Bills game was postponed. BDE

Dear Varnai family, Having been a long-time DDO resident, I would sometimes see Steve 3-4 times a week at the bakery. We’d often have a friendly conversation.
