Dear Michael and Family, My deepest condolences for your loss. Ronnie made an impact on so many lives through his love of sports. Generations of Cote St Luc athletes are grateful for his selfless dedication and sense of fairness that made these leagues so special. He loved to talk to me about the Expos, many of whom he got to meet through his real work at Guess, but he talked with equal passion about our local adult leagues which made our games matter even more to us all. Seeing Ronnie and Joe Raie setting up shop along the glass for a full day of Saturday games is seared into my memory, as is both of their unique voices greeting me as 'Scotty'. I think of them every time I walk into a hockey rink and there are so many people like me who will always remember how their volunteer work made our lives so much richer. Michael, I know he loved getting to see you play but he never showed any favoritism to you or your teams - something so rare when it comes to fathers and sports. Thank you for sharing your amazing dad with all of us. May his memory be a blessing.

Dearest Rhonda, Michael and family, it is with the heaviest heart that I pen this message on the loss of your magnificent dad, Ronnie. It seems inconceivable that such a larger than life force of kindness, generosity and humour has left us. To be in his uplifting company was to be reminded of the best of us. May he rest in peace and love reunited with his precious partner Sil, delighting those in heaven with his signature schmooze and secret stock of sweets.. Here for you always with love and friendship.

Dear Rhonda and Michael, Nat and Sheila, we send you our deepest condolences. It is very hard to say good-bye to a dear person such as Ronnie. Loved and respected by all, Ronnie always greeted us with a smile, whether on the baseball field, or in synagogue, or in everyday encounters. He and Sylvia walked together in the after -supper hours, and we interacted when we could--a special tradition. The loss of both Sylvain and Ronnie in such close proximity in time is very difficult. Their passing marks the end of an era. They will be sorely missed. Rhonda and Michael, may your fond memories of your time together with them give you comfort. Vicki and Stan

I first met Ron when he must have been in his early 60's. I picked up on his American accent, and thought it odd that an American would move to Quebec, and not the other way around. We met at vCOPS, I being one of the first to join the Cote St. Luc volunteers. We often met at 8100, or on the road. One day, Ron was selling his old things at a garage sale, and I bought one of his old radios. One day the news came by way of the grapevine, that Ron had fallen, and suffered a deadly fall, damaging his brain. I would see Ron for months later at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He persevered, eventually being remarkably welcomed back to vCops; a great surprise to everyone. To overcome such injury was a testament to Ron's stamina. May he rest in peace, and allow the family to share in the great memories that he left behind.

RONALD “ROOVIE” YARIN I, and my siblings (and their spouses and children), were profoundly saddened when we learned of our dear uncle’s passing this past Tuesday. Uncle “Roovie” (a term of endearment and “nickname” derived from his Hebrew name of Reuvein), was, is and will remain, always and forever, very special to us. Roovie was our mother’s big brother, by just 10¾ months, they were exceptionally close, even though separated by 400 miles for most of 60 years. To us, it was “Roovie and Reva”—she loved him, looked up to him, and looked forward to seeing him, more than words can describe, and vice versa. His care for my mother (and father) and for all of us, for his parents especially, resonates still with me, after all these years. I recall my grandmother, preparing herself and her modest “home” for Roovie’s and Sylvia’s, OBM, visits to New York. He was smart, handsome, athletic, charming, kind, generous, caring, and loving—carrying himself, paradoxically but naturally, with both an elegance and “everyman’s ease.” He was authentic, genuine, and someone others wanted to be around. To us, he was an “All American”—just as the Coca-Cola and Hershey’s chocolates he so loved—but, no doubt, with all he did in and for Côte-Saint-Luc, I would not have been at all surprised to have received a letter from Mayor Ronald Yarin. He was a “doer” and a positive difference maker. He was modest, humble—atop of being smart, hardworking, non-complaint, family-focused, and loyal (likely to a fault at times) to his myriad friends. If he would have run, he would have won in a landslide. A visit to New York from uncle Roovie was looked forward to like the coming of a holiday—the fun ones—ones that involved presents, lots of eating, laughing, and fun activities. To me, and to my siblings, he was fun, happy, and “cool” uncle Roovie. To my mother, he was her loving, protective, dependable, responsible, big brother—of whom she was very proud. He was appropriate, much needed, and always welcomed—hot chocolate in the winter and iced tea in the summer. Never, not once, did I ever hear her say anything negative about her brother—she was overjoyed for his happiness and successes, both personal and professional, just as Big Brother Roovie was for her and Uncle Roovie, was for each of us. He knew the names, ages and key life events, milestones and accomplishments of mine, my siblings, my nieces and nephews, and then of their children as well. He was hot chocolate in the winter and iced tea in the summer. Sadly of course not I nor others saw him (or Sylvia, OBM) often enough. Life seems to have many ways of distracting us with superficial/material matters, and teasing us with the illusion of having more time/as much opportunity as we need/want whenever we “choose” to use it. Unfortunately, the “gift card” of time and opportunity, has a way of expiring on us way too soon. Rhonda and Michael, Distinctly I recall, as I let you know yesterday, our Dad and your dear Mom, without exception, each and every time I spoke with them, and asked about each of you, they sang your praises and updated me on your accomplishments—in fact, Sylvia likely never waited for me to ask ;-). Your parents, a wonderful, loving and obviously well-matched couple for nearly 60 years, did not just love you, but they were in-love with each of you. May the memory of your dear father, our Uncle Roovie, Reuvein ben Yaakov v’Henna (Reuvein the son of Yaakov (Jack) and Henna (Annette), OBM and his abundant merits, be a blessing and source of inspiration for all of us, and may you take some measure of comfort in knowing that your dad is reunited with your mom, his sister, my dear mother, and their parents, and may we see them all again, in perfect health, with the coming of the Messiah, speedily on our days. Roovie, on behalf of my siblings, and my dear mother as well, as she did not have the chance, we humbly ask for your forgiveness if we ever were rude to you, disrespectful, ungrateful, or otherwise did anything that we should not have done or did not do things we should have done to and for you. *It is worth noting, as hardly a coincidence, that today (Friday, January 13, 2023), on the Hebrew calendar, is the 20th day of the Hebrew month of Tevet marks the 818th Yahrzeit of (the) Rambam Rabbi Moshe ben (son of) Maimon—Maimonides. I also recall that Sylvia, a beloved and dedicated teacher for many years, taught at École Maïmonide. To be sure, and further connecting your Dad and Mom to you, and us to all of them, are Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles of Faith, which include and conclude with #12 (the belief in the arrival of the Messiah and the Messianic Era), and #13 (the belief in the resurrection of the dead). We love you, are here for you, and want to use our “gift card” with you.

Rhonda and Michael Rosanne and I were truly saddened to hear of your fathers passing. Ron defined the term menschkeit. In that he had no equal. I first met your dad in the early 80’s while he was working for a client of mine. I remember his bowls of candy, his smile and kind words to everyone he met. He would often return from his lunch with some little toy for my children, even though we had only known each other for a short time. I remember his love of all things baseball: the expos, dodgers and the CSL Exec league. On CSL Executive baseball nights he always left work on time to ensure the chalklines were properly drawn, and that the grounds were dry enough after a rainfall. He enjoyed all things sweet, the simple pleasures of life: Entemann's blackout cake, Jolly Ranchers, jelly candies, donuts and muffins. On holiday in Ogunquit Beach, being the first to rise, he would walk the 3 miles from the Milestone hotel to Cogdon's Donuts to ensure the family had fresh baked goods on their wakening. On his recommendation, we still stay at the same hotel he did. We hope knowing that your parents were, and are, loved so dearly by their friends and community, is of some solace to you. May Ron, along with your dear mother Sylvia, rest in peace. Warmly, Rosanne and Lewis

Ron was an icon around Cote Saint-Luc, well known for his interest and participation in sports. spanning decades. More recently he was a much admired and appreciated member of our volunteer Citizens on Patrol team. Even when he could no longer do regular patrols he would ride along with vCOP buddies an an observer. He did much more than observe. He provided camaraderie, humour and a positive energy, on the road and at our meetings and events. His dedication to the city and fellow citizens was admirable and an example for future generations. He will be remembered.

Jonathan Labow-Hart - 14 days ago

Michael and Rhonda, I was very sad to hear the passing of your dear father. Ronnie was a real mensch with a heart of gold. He was always warm and friendly to all those that came his way. Knowing Ronnie all of my life, from CSL, living near my aunt and uncle, to having his sister and brother in law live a few doors down from my parents I would see him quite often. In later years being on the same floor as my Bubbie and still having the dignity and respect that he so deserved. Michael when we were past neighbours we both often ran across the street at the same time, you to visit your dad, and me to visit my bubbie and it was done with pure love and devotion. The love and respect you showed both your parents daily, and made them your number one priority at all times was so comforting to them, every child should emulate this. My deepest sympathies to you both and may you all be spared any further sorrow.

Dear Michael and Rhonda, We were so saddened to learn of your dad's passing. He was a huge contributor to the growth of the Cote Saint Luc community through his many volunteer activities. He always handled himself in the most humble of ways and we all considered him a "prince of a man". We were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to honour him at the City's Golf Outing several years ago and his speech left many in tears. The sports programs between the 1970's and 2010's in Cote Saint Luc would not have been the success they were without the monumental contribution from your dad. He loved Cote Saint Luc, the people he worked with and the kids he helped oversee through all of his activities. We sincerely hope that in knowing how everyone felt about your dad , your burden of sorrow can be minimized.

I first met Ronnie aka the “candy man “ fresh out of university and working at Le Chateau head office. I would go by his office and be in awe with the vast assortment of sweets that literally filled his back and side walls. His door was opened to all employees who would get their daily sugar rush, I however being a newbie, was too shy to partake in this activity. A few days later he came over to my desk and said “Hello Doll, come with me” I followed him into his office terrified I was being fired, and he said that he heard I was too shy to get some candy, but he is personally extending me the invitation to take as much as I want any time I want. Years later I re -connected with Ronnie and Sylvia who became good friends with my brother Martin, and finally at Mount Sinai where my mom was also a resident. Ronnie would always say “ hello doll” when he saw me and wait for Michael’s daily visits and weekend outings. May his memory be a blessing to both you Rhonda , Michael and families, as well as the lives of those he touched. BDE

Mindy and Irving Schok - 14 days ago

Dear Michael and Rhonda, Shiela and Nat Agensky and family, We offer our deepest sympathies but cannot even express how saddened we are to hear about the passing of Ron. We know how difficult the past several years have been and tried to remember better times. Forty years ago we kept hearing people talking about Ron Yarin. He seemed to be the king of Cote Saint Luc. He was everywhere, from minor hockey, to minor baseball, hockey exchanges, Cote Saint luc executive league, and a volunteer on so many community projects. I (Irv) went out of my way to meet him at the arena and introduced myself. That was one of the best decisions of my life. We had so much in common and became close friends and soon our wives became close as well. Over the years we enjoyed their company both in the city and the country. Ron liked nothing better than sitting on the dock and getting that dark tan. We loved when he would just drop by the house "for a few minutes" then stayed the afternoon. Mindy glowed everytime he would call her "doll" as she served him his favourite watermelon. Ron was an all round wonderful guy. Losing Sylvia not long ago was a hard blow to all of us as well. They were a wonderful couple that enriched our lives and we will miss them both dearly. We cannot say enough about the love, devotion, and commitment that you both, Michael and Rhonda, showed over so many years of caring for your parents. We hope you can find comfort in all the good memories and in knowing that so many people care. We wish you no more sorrow. love Mindy and Irving Schok
