Edna and family, Heidi and I are so sorry for your loss and we send our heartfelt condolences to you all. Those few months the three of us spent together so many years ago on Kibbutz Machanayim remain among the most memorable of my life. Mark and I spent countless hours together in the cotton fields there, connecting and un-connecting irrigation drainage pipes ala Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times. While the work was mundane, our conversations were rich and the bonds we created were strong. Equally as memorable from those bygone days was being with you and Mark shortly after you welcomed Omer into the world… The circle of life, both overwhelmingly joyous and sad. I feel fortunate to have befriended you and Mark and grateful that after he reached out to me a few years ago, we were able to reunite in Montreal. With both Omer and Aaron in attendance, it was easy to see why his family was a source of such great pride. His passing was much too soon, and while the void he has left will be felt, his many accomplishments and good deeds will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him. May his memory be a blessing and a comfort to you during this difficult time. Heidi and John

“When Great Trees Fall When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses, and even elephants lumber after safety. When great trees fall in forests, small things recoil into silence, their senses eroded beyond fear. When great souls die, the air around us becomes light, rare, sterile. We breathe, briefly. Our eyes, briefly, see with a hurtful clarity. Our memory, suddenly sharpened, examines, gnaws on kind words unsaid, promised walks never taken. Great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened. Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance, fall away. We are not so much maddened as reduced to the unutterable ignorance of dark, cold caves. And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed.” ― Maya Angelou Edna and family, I was so shaken I could not write a proper condolence. Mark was a great soul. He was so good to me - the shiksa whom he made feel like a beloved "honourary member of the Tribe." He was also there for me when I needed help and had no family to turn to. I'm so sorry that I was physically unable to attend the funeral and could only watch it on youtube. My heart is heavy for your loss and blessed to have known such a great soul. With shared sorrow, Lisa

Edna, Risa and I are so sorry for your loss. I met Mark only a few years ago when I joined the BGU Toronto lay leadership and was immediately impressed with his passion, wisdom, humour and commitment. He was a warm, compassionate and caring man and did wonders for all of the organizations he championed. It was a pleasure joining you and him in Israel this past May as well as celebrating the Toronto gala only a few short weeks ago - he was I. His glory. He will be greatly missed and we hope that his memories will be a blessing for you and your family.

Dear Edna We met you and Mark on occasion, you may not remember us, but we remember you. As Annie & I watched the funeral (thanks to David setting it up on YouTube), we found each speaker’s words moved us emotionally. Mark accomplished great things. Each speaker, however, spoke about Mark as a person. We were struck that as a person, remarkable in his faith, his word, his integrity. Mark was a noble man. A noble man being so rare in these days. We are blessed he came into our lives, and we will remember him always. Our condolences wishing you peace for you and your family. Annie & Aeron

Dear Edna and family, This has been tremendously difficult for me to write. I am one of Mark's 'kids' - a group of children who joined JNF in my early teen's and were cared for unconditionally. Mark has been one of my biggest advocates and supporters. Cheering me on from near and far and encouraging me to follow my heart and dreams. It is clear from all of these messages that his impact stretched far and beyond what anyone quite understood. I, like many others remember the JNF Tree-a-thons fondly where Mark taught us to live for others and build our community. When I moved to Toronto, he was the first to call and say - come join me at Ben Gurion, another cause close to his heart and an organization that benefitted tremendously from Mark's presence, mind, courage and love. This is one person who undoubtably made our Jewish community stronger and the world a better place. I will miss you, Mark.

He was not just an exceptional loving kind and generous family man, he gave so much of himself to the Community. Dear Family, I had the honor of being part of the BGU team participating in the JMCC in 2018 in Montreal. Mark took us under his wing during our entire stay in Montreal. He made sure we felt at home in a place so far from home. He took us out to one of the fanciest dinners I had ever been to, watched us compete and gave us important feedback, introduced us and let us feel his smile was following us at all times. It was such a meaningful experience, especially knowing there was someone rooting for us. We met again (of course, over a fancy meal) while he visited Israel. It was great to meet an old friend. He never missid a birthday wish... Always reminding me that he was part of my life. Thanks Mark. You will be missed. Lot's of love to the family. יהי זכרו ברוך

Dear Edna, Omer, Noam and the rest of the family, I am so saddened to hear of Mark’s sudden and untimely passing. He was an undeniable presence in any room that he entered with his boisterous personality, warm disposition, and signature moustache and suit. Mark always made it a point to congratulate me on any milestone I reached, whether it was graduating from school, getting married, or becoming a father. Keenly aware of how busy Mark was, I was always touched that he somehow found the time to stop and congratulate me. It was the kind of man he was. I remember his delicious pizza bagels, passionate JNF telethons, and the light that shot out of his eyes whenever he would talk about Ben Gurion University. Mark is my dad’s oldest and best friend. Dear Edna and family I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Mark's sudden passing from my sister, who, as you know, worked with him for many years at JNF. I never had that pleasure as I had left JNF by then. But she so often shared stories with me of his great humour and kind ways at the office so I came to "know" him in that way and met him years later. Just a lovely man who always, even years after leaving JNF and despite knowing thousands of people, remembered my sister's birthday every year and made sure to share a joke with her in a card or email as a birthday wish. Of course years later, Edna, when you and I worked briefly together I got to know you and talk to him from time to time. I sincerely wish I had gotten to know him better though, as he was one of those people who just shone a bright light on the world! May your wonderful memories of him bring solace to you and your family at this difficult time to gently start to heal your hearts.

Dear Edna & family, There are no words. We are still in shock. Mark was larger than life. Mark and I worked closely together at Ben-Gurion University/Canada and I witnessed firsthand the miracle he achieved by building BGU into the most successful Israeli based non profit in Canada through his leadership and hard work. In the past few months we travelled together to Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, New York and Israel. Mark , with his boundless he always went out of his way to look after everyone. He just knew how to make everyone feel good. A genuine mensch, there are not enough superlatives to describe Mark. He most definitely left his "mark". We will miss him. Diane & Jack Altman

Dear Edna and Family, It is with a heavy heart that we write this. Mark was an ambassador for all things good with Medinat Yisroel. His true love for the Jewish people, its causes and its land was apparent to all who knew him. His ability to bring people on board for all his causes was a result of his enthusiasm and sincere devotion to better our world. His love for the culinary arts and sharing his table with others was unique. While I was the president of JNF Montreal he was my friend, mentor, and supporter. He always included my husband Mark in our conversations of how to achieve our goals and fix the world. His sudden and untimely death has shocked us all. While our community has lost one of its strongest advocates, we have lost a true and dear friend. May you be comforted by your sweet memories of Mark Z"L, and may he find peace in Olam Habah. Dear Edna and family: To say we are all shocked and saddened is an understatement. His love for his family and Israel and community and good food and travel are all well known, but what stands out to me is the way he always treated others. A real mensch. As successful as he was at so many projects, he always championed and encouraged so many people to achieve their best and go on to bigger and better things. He has been so omnipresent for so long, it is difficult to imagine a world without his physical presence. Dear Edna and family, Marian and I extend our most sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of Mark, a true mensch in every sense of the word. As one of Rick’s oldest friends, he was a regular at the Levy home on Circle Road, and with his signature good humour always had time for the annoying younger brother. Mark was, as everyone knows, a pillar of our community. Even though he achieved much success, he was a modest man. He always greeted you with a warm smile and was approachable and available. He personified what it meant to be dedicated to the community and to Israel and was the paradigm of the Jewish professional corps. He will be truly missed. We hope that you will be spared further sorrow. Fondly Marian and Ron Levy

I was so very sad to hear about Mark. Though I hadn’t seen him in nearly fifty years, I was always pleased to find his name pop up now and then as he continued his career in community service. It’s fair to say that Mark left an indelible stamp on everyone he encountered. Certainly he did on me - when I was a junior counsellor at CBB, he came to our section to speak with me as I had been feeling a bit low (nothing of consequence - it had just been a long summer!). An hour of so of conversation with this lovely, kind and brilliant man, whose eyes also reflected his wonderful humour, and I felt better. Encouraged, ready to continue, filled with new confidence and enthusiasm, I was very grateful to him, and I never forgot his empathy and encouragement. It really made a difference in my young life. Deepest condolences to his wife, family and loved ones. Sincerely, Anne Bernstein

Dear Edna and Family, We were shocked and saddened to hear of Mark's untimely passing. Mark and I were in a video meeting together a week ago, and he was his usual optimistic and ebullient self. We go back to McGill University days together, and we re-connected a few years ago through BGU. He was a role model to many of us as a strong supporter of Israel and as a preeminent fundraiser for Jewish causes. He will be sorely missed in the Community. We hope that fond memories of your good times together will help you through this difficult period. Richard and Mayme Vineberg

Dear Edna and Family I am still reeling from the news of Mark’s passing. He is easily one of the most fascinating and unique people I have ever met. I will always cherish our trip to Ben Gurion University in Israel with my daughter and our good friend Larry Vickar. He taught me a lot about Jewish culture, Canadian Art and the culinary delights of Montreal. We shared a passion for history and the Montreal Canadiens. I loved going to Gibby’s where as a young man he dated a good looking young waitress named Edna, and one night he ended up getting access to the untouched steak of one René Lévesque! He is a legend in the fund raising world. He was a great family man, a good friend - he will be missed.

Dear Edna and family, I was very sorry to hear of Mark's sudden death. Mark was a big bear of a man, full of energy and warmth, and seemed born to serve the Jewish community. He was a friend of my late sister's at Jewish People's School and West Hill High School, and I would see him behind the counter at the bakery on Queen Mary before he found his true calling as a director, fundraiser, and go-to hasbara man at the Jewish National Fund and then BGU. It was Mark who in 1912 invited me as media to a seminal conference on desertification. I looked forward to an almost weekly photo of himself and Edna together on Facebook, I could tell just from those photos that as a husband and father, Mark also knew what the truly most important things in life were. Dear Mendelson Family, I work at JNF Toronto, and when Mark was at JNF Montreal, we were colleagues. I had the pleasure of going on the first JNF staff mission in 2010 and got to know him better. When he left to BGU, I would often see him on the elevator when he came to Toronto as the JNF and BGU offices were in the same building. May you be comforted by the fond memories you have and great stories people will tell you about him. I had always heard from the Montreal office that his latkas at the Chanukah parties were legendary. He was a true mensch and will be missed. Rest in peace Mark.

We are certain that Mark will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him...a truly wonderful, soft, and kind man. Always giving to others both personally and through his exceptional years in Community. I met Mark, when Jane introduced us at the bagel shop, and we have talked and enjoyed each other ever since. Our hearts go out to you and your entire family. A life that touches others, as he has touched ours and so many, lives on forever.

Dear Edna, Omer, Noam, Aaron & family, As we all face the shock of Mark's untimely passing, each of us in our own way, reflect on what a terrific human being he represents to his family, friends & colleagues. An outstanding leader, full of creativity, drive and passion in everything he did; a tireless worker and an inspiration to so many people across the globe - but most of all, a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and loyal and dear friend. He was so proud of each of you. Mark will also be missed for his incredible joie de vivre, his excellence in culinary art, his love of art, sports and wine; his humour and sharp intellect.....and those special phone calls, shout-outs and beautiful gestures to family, friends and colleagues. Always there to help, support and to offer his wisdom, Mark will forever remain with us and I will miss him greatly. Claire & Eddy
