Dear Deb and the rest of the mishpucha, I will forever remember how, kind, spirited, refreshingly straightforward and dignified your mother was. I spent a lot of time with Selma because I was a good friend of her grandson, David Hartal. I was a young teen and Selma was a hearty septuagenarian. We must have played hundreds of chess games over the years. Selma was always a stickler for the rules, I can still hear her admonishing me today: "you touch the piece you move it!". But she was always gracious in her teaching. She also had a wicked sense of humor, often goaded on by Danny. I remember learning what a 'gully' was when she remarked that it is where the person passing by us in a risqué outfit may end up if they weren't more tznius. She may have only been half-joking, but I always loved her wry comments and observations. I didn't speak to Selma very much about her past. This was mostly because I was too young to know to ask, and too young to receive the answers--many of them tinged by tragedy and trauma. But I soaked up a lot of Selma through osmosis. By simply spending time with her, speaking to her, picking up unconsciously on the dignity with which she held herself and also the levity that meant that that trademarked Selma smile was never far away. Selma loved all of you dearly! May you enjoy all the wonderful memories you have together. Love, A

Dear Florence - Eli, Marvin, Debbie - Dan - and all your children / grand-children: "Yesterday" - we cousins were playing hide-and-seek in Bobbe and Zaide's basement: "today", we are losing our parents. Time passages are much faster than ever we contemplated in our own childhood. Relish every positive memory, and "walk tall" with the strength, integrity, and dignity garnered of your own achievements. Draw strength from one another in your mourning, and know that my arms are around you all. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and of Israel.

Mrs L….what can I say. The knowledge of your passing has left a huge hole in my heart. I’m so grateful for the times we shared together at Chateau He!! The times you would scold me because I was late (even though my shift hadn’t even started) from your late night coffee to you Mandys salads with never enough dressing (Debbie should have brought more). Your cell phone that was always dead but we called anyways. Your tray that was always perfectly arranged to see your meal and read your menu a million times. We shared laughs, tears, hugs and love. Know that you were and will always be loved. May peace be with you and your gefilte fish have horseradish! Love you Mum

Dear Debbie, Danny, David, Loucie and Ronnie and families, My deepest sympathies on the passing of your beloved mother and grandmother. Your mom was a fabulous lady who I remember greeting me with her huge smile at Ellen's holiday dinners. Your moms presence always made the evening that much more special as she took a genuine interest how we were all doing and was a great conversationalist. The years spent at Maimonides your mom was equally as gracious to my mom, always making her feel comfortable and bringing light and love to her and many others with her infectious smile and positive attitude. The adoration and devotion you shared with your mom knew no boundaries. Your love and loyalty is a testament to the remarkable family you are and the remarkable lady Selma was. I only pray that the wonderful lifetime memories you shared will be a source of comfort and pride and a blessing for always. I and my late mom were so fortunate to have known Selma ! Lynn Herzeg - 12 days ago

Dear Marv, Debbie and Florence, I am so sorry to read of your mother's passing. I have such fond childhood memories of her sitting poolside through every Y swim team practice as her four kids swam laps back and forth...and back and forth...and back and forth. Years later, I believe at your father's shiva, having not seen your mom since I was a pre-teen, I shared my memories of having worked alongside Esther on waterfront at Redwood Day Camp. I remember how, with tears welling up in her eyes, she told me how much it meant to her. I truly hope that there is some spiritual realm where she and Esther, along with your father, are reunited now. Sending you and your families my warmest condolences, Lynn Herzeg
