Beatrice Gurman (née Cooperberg)

April 3, 1924 – November 18, 2024

Peacefully, on November 18, 2024, at the age of one hundred. Beloved wife of the late Nathan, who died in 1992 after forty-six years of marriage. She leaves behind her two sons, Stephen (Ann Thompson) and Seymour and her two grandchildren, David and Daniel to whom she was devoted. Predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Bill and Lenice, Harry and Mary, Hyman (Hy) and Edie. Beatrice will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, family and by all who knew and loved her.

Beatrice did not let the premature death of her husband slow her down. She continued taking her annual winter trips to Puerto Rico, where she had many friends, for the next twenty years as well as joining tours to Russia and Spain.

Beatrice made frequent trips to Ottawa to visit her beloved grandchildren and, once they were old enough, taught them to play cards. When she stopped driving, she would take the bus and always made friends with her fellow passengers.

Beatrice was very active outside the home and volunteered with the Sisterhood of the Chevra Kadisha synagogue for many years as well as with the B’nai Brith (Women’s International), Jewish General Hospital and Maimonides Geriatric Centre.

Her worsening dementia led to her moving into the Montefiore residence in 2012 and then to the Waldorf in 2015, where she lived in the assisted care section. All the staff in the residence knew Beatrice. She had a beautiful smile for everyone and a twinkle in her eyes.

Thank you to the 4th floor staff of the Waldorf residence for taking good care of her. We would also like to especially thank her caregiver, Linda Corpuz, who spent so much time with Beatrice, making sure that she was comfortable, well dressed, and happy.

Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Friday, November 22 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the King George Association Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva will be strictly private. Donations in Beatrice’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
