Dear Alvin , Jessica & Ian , News of Harriet’s passing left me profoundly saddened . Harriet and I shared meaningful connections over many years both professionally and personally. When I returned to JFS in the late 70’s to assume the helm of Coordinator of Family & Individual Services from Harriet, I knew I had very large shoes to fill . I quickly realized I could not and had to chat my own course . Later , we were colleagues when Harriet returned to to JFS as a Supervisor in Children's Services and Youth Protection . Harriet embodied the true essence of a Professional Social Worker . Her humanity, wisdom and clinical excellence few could emulate .with a charm , wit and grace to match . I understand she faced her illness with the same courage and grace . I can only imagine how immeasurable her loss is to you, her family and grandchildren who meant the world to her . May she rest in eternal peace and may you each find a measure of comfort in her love of you and yours of her . Arlene Lutter

Dear family Tobman, It is with great sadness that I learned of Harriet’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Harriet at the Cummings Centre. We were close colleagues who often met in each other’s office at the end of the day to talk about the challenges of our work. I always appreciated Harriet’s take on issues and our talks were warm and supportive. Her ability as a wordsmith and in time, a gifted painter, spoke to an impressive creativity and intelligence that set her apart. Harriet was a very special individual who will be sorely missed by all who had the honour to know her. May her memory be for blessing.

Alvin, Jessica and Ian. Your mom and met as we registered at McGill in the school of social work. We became fast friends and did our thesis together albeit she did most of the work as I prepared my wedding. We remained good friends (a few ups and downs) until the end. We shared many interests. Reading, painting and swimming; she loved the water. My boys babysat her kids. Her recent illness drew us closer again. I will miss you Harriet and am consoled only by you being at peace now. As I’m away, I will watch the funeral on Wednesday and will be with you in heart and spirit. Sending my love to all of you!

Dear Family, Harriet and I go back so many years, from so many different areas of our lives. I am so so sorry and saddened to learn of her passing. What a great asset she was to the Jewish community over the years (we also worked at Cummings together).... our children attended school together..... my heart and thoughts are with you as we mourn our great loss. Dear Alvin, Jessica and Ian, I am so saddened to hear about Harriet. To me Harriet was a social worker "extraordinaire" whose words were eloquent and purposeful. She was my supervisor for many years, mentor and good friend. Robert, Alison and I share so many beautiful memories with you from vacations in St. Donat to so many family gatherings, birthdays dinners, skate parties and the list goes on - so much fun we experienced together! It is very difficult for me to absorb this news about Harriet, but I am certain she has left an outstanding legacy for you, her friends and the community! May you always cherish her wonderful memories.

Dear Ian, Alvin, and family: I'm so sad to learn of Harriet's passing, and I'm terribly sorry for your loss. As a kid, Harriet always made me feel comfortable when I would come over to play with Ian; she was always present, and was warm, welcoming, and motherly to Ian's friends. Later on in life, I had the honour to learn more about Harriet, as my client. She had a passion for travel, and I would look forward to our meetings when she would bring me up to speed with where in the world she'd recently returned home from, or what was piquing her interest for upcoming travel; her passion was intoxicating! As a talented artist, I was also impressed to see her paintings, every time I would come over. I remember Harriet telling me that she would only ever consider moving to acquire more wall space for her many works of art. While this loss is devastating, I know that Harriet's echo will live on in all who knew her, and loved her. May Harriet's memory be an inspiration, and a blessing. Rob Fainer
