Dear Soryl, Shoshana, and Family, I was so sorry to read of Chana’s death. Our friendship goes all the way back to Barclay Street in the 50’s. What a wonderful time and place to be growing into our teen years. Chana was always full of fun, jokes and music. What great summer nights we shared with a group of the street kids on our front balcony, singing every Weaver, Kingston Trio, Pete Seeger song we knew while Chana and my brother, Bernie played their guitars and banjos. I reconnected a few years ago with Chana. We spent two days together, eating, shopping, exploring Old Montreal…things I hadn’t done since my move years ago to Vancouver. We ended our time together sitting on a park bench not far from her home, talking about everything and nothing for hours. Before we parted she handed me a beautiful necklace that she had made for me. I wish I could have those 2 days back. I will always remember Chana. With love, Sandy

We reconnected a few years back and Channa never failed to send me interesting articles about the Yiddish world. The world has a lost a wonderful woman. May her memory be for a blessing. Norma

To all of Chana's loved ones, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies on your tremendous loss. Seeing Mrs. Goodfriend's name on the Paperman's website was such a shock .It brought back so many special memories. Grade 3 at Jewish Peretz School in the early 70's was a magical time in my life. As I look back on my childhood there was one teacher who I truly adored and that was no doubt, Mrs. Goodfriend. She taught her students about the importance of emotions; friendships and kindness. Arithmatic and other standard teaching methods came second; much to the dismay of my late mother! Chana was a trailblazer; she taught me how to learn outside the box and for that I loved her. Her vivacious nature never waivered when she belted out "The Flinstones" theme song walking her students down the hallway. She made learning fun! At the end of grade 3 she took her students to her home for lunch and then to the park where we had water fights and got completely drenched with our clothes on. My parents were in complete disbelief but she didn't care! Chana defied the rules and that's what made her so cool! I can't imagine your pain in loosing such a wonderful woman. Please know that Chana will always hold a very special, significant place in my heart. May her memory always be a blessing. Naomi

Dear Mika and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Chana was absolutely everything that you wrote about . She was also a wonderful mentor. I started off as a volunteer in the library with Beverley and Chana. After a while, Chana began to teach me everything that I would need to know to not only, take over any library but to love the work. Her mentorship gave me a gift, one that lasted more than 20 years. The only thing about Chana that you didn’t mention that everyone who ever worked with her knew was that she was ALWAYS misplacing her keys! May she rest in peace and may everyone remember her with the same fondness as I. Ingrid Gurman

Alex - 22 days ago

Dear Mika, my heart goes out to you, as well as Soryl, Gerry, Shana & Ray and everyone touched by this loss. Chana and I had many giggles through the years with her stories and perspectives. When I was new mom, she gave us little gifts for Lulu: clothing she had made, books she knew Lulu would love, arts and crafts supplies and little mementos of her own father’s embroidery in sweet frames. Usually things imbued with family history, delivered with a backstory. I loved her garden and her chicken kukletten, her outspoken truth and her irrepressible Chana-ness. Much love.
