Dear Sandy and family, Over 30 years ago several mothers and I wanted to start a fundraising group. While many asked what could we possibly do, it was Dr. Hy Goldman who jumped on it and told us “Put your money where your mouth is.” He believed in us, encouraged us, nurtured us, and inspired us. Most incredible was that he rolled up his sleeves and worked tirelessly alongside us. Just for Kids is now more than 30 years strong, and forever indebted to Hy, a founding board member. He saw the positive in even the most negative circumstances - following the saying “It is better to light a candle than to complain about the darkness.” He followed this philosphy in all aspects of his life – as a caring doctor, a community member, an advocate, a teacher, and a leader, holding many high positions while being so humble. What an honour it was to work with him more recently at Tiny Tots and see the wisdom and the energy that he imparted, while enjoying a longtime friendship. Hy brought light, hope, and music into our lives. We will always remember him and try to follow his wonderful lessons. His legacy will live on forever. My sincere condolences on your loss of such an exceptional man.

To Sandy and all the Goldman family, Hy Goldman was a visionary,. He helped establish the Peduatric Insulin Pump Centre at the MCH. This was a first in Canada and probably in North America, and a program that had a significant impact on the lives of many children and their families living with diabetes throughout the province, as well as adults, physicians ans diabetes educators.. Klezkanada was another of his visions which has provided a wealth of music and culture far and wide. Please accept my deepest condolences. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in peace,.

Sandy, Ilan, Daveed and Ronit, my deepest sympathies to you and your families. As you all well know, I spent the better part of my teens at your "social club" on Queen Mary, where so many unforgettable memories were made (the numbers 489-9014 are still etched in my brain). Some "Hy-lights" of those memories include spending time in the den upstairs with the doc, while he not only waxed poetic on the many redeeming qualities of John Denver, but backed it up by digging into his record collection and spinning some tunes. (I had shared many "musical discovery" moments with Ilan, but this was my first with Hy). On another occasion while sitting in the kitchen sharing Graham crackers (which for some unknown reason was the Goldman snack food of choice), he took the opportunity to give me a complete lesson on the history of Klezmer music - and I remember how he was so passionate about it. I'll never forget his incredibly firm handshake that you couldn't let go of until HE was finished talking to you, as well as his Vulcan bicep grip, which was always accompanied by phrases like "how are you Eric? You doing ok? That's all I want to make sure of, that you're doing ok." Then he'd let go as if to say "Alright, I'm done checking up on you, now go do your music thing in the basement with the other boys". Hy was many important things to many people... To me he was the welcoming dad at my friend's house who always made a point of showing up to share a moment of humour, sarcasm, or wisdom. He most certainly left his mark on me, many times over (and probably some on my biceps too). Sending a big hug to the entire Goldman clan.

Dear Goldman Family, When I started at the Montreal Children's over 25 yrs ago Hy was of the age when most would consider slowing down. Yet, to each patient encounter Hy always brought the enthusiasm of a newly minted staff. Most importantly, Hy had genuine concern and respect for the whole MCH care team working with him, and devoted his energy to make the Children's such a special place to work and practice. May the knowledge of what Hy meant to us comfort you in this time of sorrow.

Sara and Irwin Tauben - 15 days ago

At an age when most men might have retired to the golf course or happily taken up a hobby, Hy not only continued to his duties as a doctor, but began to seriously pursue his interest in Jewish music. He could have simply learned to play an instrument, focusing on Klezmer tunes. Instead, he made it possible for thousands to learn to play multiple Jewish musical traditions while deepening their understanding of Jewish history, culture and folkways. He directly impacted four generations while KlezKanada continues to inspire and motivate participants from around the world. While we express condolences to Sandy and the entire family on the lose of this extraordinary man, we share with you in celebrating a lifetime of achievement.

A gentle giant in the medical and klezmer world has left us. Hy z”L you were always so kind ever since my first klez in 1996, to when you encouraged me to join the board a number of years ago. You and Sandy were instrumental (pun intended) in celebrating Sharon and I up at Klez days before our wedding - first in an unforgettable hora- chairs and all - at the Thursday night ball, and then at our impromptu ufruf that Shabbos morning - showering us with love and candies- such a special moment that we will not soon forget. I feel privileged that I also got to work with you on a professional level at Tiny Tots (both of us always on the lookout for cookies or any other snacks at the reception desk) and love that you were able to meet my own kids and watch them grow in shul (both TBDJ and the Shaar) on so many occasions. You and your smile, humour, crazy firm handshake, love of and contribution to medicine and Yiddishkeit, and most of all your beautiful love story with Sandy will be sorely missed! Love Stephanie, Sharon, Dorielle, and Amiella. זאָל ער האָבן אַ ליכטיקן גן עדן. BDE

To Ronit and the Goldman family, my deepest condolences. Hy was ever-present at the MCH, and with his Council efforts and projects like the creation of the staff lounge, he allowed for so much interaction among the staff and thus in. many ways became the heartbeat of the Hospital. His holding court in the small cafeteria as he wove stories of glory and challenges was legendary, with younger staff silently passing the table so as not to disturb the discussions. And yes the energy, resolve, and constancy in his every activity was remarkable. His sense of humor led to a great sense of anticipation when one was about to meet him. So deeply appreciated by all, Hy will be missed and that spirit will live for a long time. Emmett

To Sandy and the Goldman family, our deepest condolences for your loss. Hy was a true visionary, who managed a full time medical career while creating a cultural movement. His work with Sandy at KlezKanada inspired hundreds of young people to dedicate a portion of their lives to the revitalization of Yiddish culture and the enrichment of Jewish life in North America, Europe and Israel. His work will live long after him and his memory is a blessing.

Michael Shevell - 16 days ago

Dear Goldman Family Hy was one of those MCH 'lifers' who contributed so much to the soul and spirit of the hospital and its culture of compassionate caring for children and their families. He was a dedicated and highly knowledgeable physician who embodied professionalism. His dedicated service and work ethic both in Metabolism where he focused on Type I diabetes and in the ED was an inspiration to the entire hospital staff. He also was a relentless contributor to his peer community, both at the hospital where he led the Council of Physicians for decades (!) and in his passion and relentless efforts in recreating the culture of klezmer. May I be permitted to share three personal memories of Hy as I recall him; 1. Looking dapper in a tux schmoozing with all at the hospital annual holiday dinner dance 2. Being with him the moment we learned that the Challenger Shuttle had exploded 3. Possessing the most bone crushing handshake I have ever experienced. May you and your family be spared further sorrows. Cherish the many memories of a remarkable man. Michael Shevell

Dear Sandy and Goldman family, Our sincerest condolences for your loss. Hy’s accomplishments, contributions and years of service to the Montreal Children’s Hospital and his community has been well acknowledged. His health care contributions to children and adolescent with type 1 Diabetes were an important part of his persona. He was a remarkable man who led a remarkable life. Memories of his role as a husband, father and grandfather will last forever.

Barry Pless - 16 days ago

My first encounter with Hy was when he berated me for having a fleur de lis vignette on my car window. That was in 1975 and when he explained his reasons I removed the decal and we remained friends ever since. The klezmer concerts were a regular highlight. It took a while before I realized how much personal effort Hy invested in restoring and sustaining this cultural heritage. Of course his contributions as a clinician and mensch lead the list of the many reasons he will be so warmly remembered.

Ronit Mooallem - 16 days ago

Dearest Sandy and family, Hy was a mentor and a friend. A long tribute is unnecessary, because his legacy is apparent to all, speaks for itself, and as far as legacies go, is quite a loud one, made up of trumpets, and violins, and tsimbels, and, yes, melodicas too. Hundreds of them. All playing in unison on a beachfront. With musicians of all abilities, from Grammy Award winners, to novices fumbling between the keys of their melodica, all playing in unison and stumbling over one another, because they're walking the wrong way. Everyone knew Hy was committed. Few know the full extent of that commitment. Year after year, participants from around the world would gather to bask in the midst of this movement he'd created. It was so powerful, that people's lives would revolve around it. And Hy was always there, in the middle of it, a proud father, cherishing all that he had spawned. So many years came and went that Hy aged significantly, yet people didn't notice. Because well into his nineties, he maintained the energy and enthusiasm of a teenager. He'd be whooping it up at the KlezKabaret well after many who were 50 years his junior called it quits and went off to bed. And he'd be at breakfast the next morning with more gusto and excitement than that same cohort still recovering from their late night. Hy, if you taught me one thing, it's how to stay young for 95 years. שלום, חבר. יהי זכרך ברוך.

Dear Sandy and Family, Linda and I want to extend to you and the family our most sincere condolences. Hy lived a long and very productive life. He was someone who got things done. Self-taught, he was responsible for setting up tissue culture at the Montreal Children’s Hospital in the early 1970s. Cells lines that were established were given the designation “WG” (for Wong/Goldman). This nomenclature for lines is still used today. He was an early pioneer in the culture of pancreatic islet cells. In the early days of diet development for PKU, Hy brought in his mother’s vegetable soup that was run on the amino acid analyzer to ensure that phenylalanine levels were very low in the recipe. He had a strong work ethic and a commitment to getting things done. May the family gain solace from his many accomplishments on behalf of others and from many wonderful memories.

Dear Sandy and Family, I have known and worked with Hy for over forty years! What an inspirational presence in my life. As you will recall, many years before I had even applied to medical school I was the photographer at Daveed's Bar-Mitzvah. You were both so much fun and gracious. Little did I know at the time, that we would continue to have a meaningful connection for the next four decades...in so many different ways! He was my teacher, friend, and mentor. He spearheaded the Council of Physicians, Pharmacists and Dentists and created an annual elegant dinner, to celebrate the staff and residents of the Montreal Children's Hospital. Together we had such synergy in planning an executing that event attended by 300 people yearly. We connected on things Yiddish, and I had the honour of being the photographer one year for his celebrated "KlezCamp". I sadly could never attend for the week, because when he left the clinic to run KlezCamp, the clinic could not function with both he and I missing, so I stayed behind. After working together for a long time in the Emergency Department of the Montreal Children's Hospital, (where he was THE most productive physician, bar-none), upon his retirement from the hospital, I was so honoured when he came to work with me in my community practice at Tiny Tots Medical Centre, at the age of 81! He was fearless in learning how to use a Computerized Electronic Medical Record, and set an example for any and every physician in how useful and youthful one could remain in "retirement". He was indefatigable, with a powerful handshake to match. He only retired at age 91! "When I grow up, I want to be just like Hy" . We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and to our collective community on the loss of this inspiring man. Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet Donna Litvack and Ben Burko

We knew and worked with Hy for many years. He was a true stalwart if there ever was one. Blessed with skill, knowledge, and empathy he was the epitome of the true and dedicated physician. His impact was felt far beyond the bounds of the Children's and Klez Canada. He will be greatly missed. Most sincere condolences.

Shuvo Ghosh & Andreea Gorgos - 17 days ago

Dear Sandy and to the entire Goldman family: we realise that this is such a difficult moment for you all, but we hope that you will take comfort in the knowledge that Hy was a shining example of someone who made a positive impact in numerous aspects of life, both professional and personal. He was a great colleague, who worked with wit and charm, and a wonderful sense of humour. He was a mentor to junior colleagues as they learned the intricacies of functioning at the Montreal Children's Hospital. He was a friend, who could share tales of his vast experiences across the years, in the US and in Canada. It was always a pleasure working with him in the ER, or during his time as a pediatrician our hospital ADHD Program, or simply collaborating during meetings in our academic hospital setting. And sharing time chatting over a coffee (usually standing in the hallway somewhere in the B-wing of the old Children's, in transit from one place to another) or when we ran into him inside or outside the hospital, he was ever young, ever interesting, and ever an example to all of us as to how to retain vigour in life. He will be missed and we send our deepest condolences to you all. May you always remember him fondly and cherish his life indubitably well-lived. May his memory be a blessing, truly.

Dear Sandy and family, Ellen and I just wanted to reach out and wish you strength. Hy was really unbelievable guy. He was tireless and ageless, and in all the years working together at the MCH he looked the same as he did from the first day I met him. His energy was boundless and was not only a great Endocrinologist, but a super efficient ER doc! Always with a smile and kindness to his colleagues and his patients. Got to know him and you, Sandy, even better through Klez. Ellen was the director at CBB, and got to work with you both, and she always marveled at the how you put the event together, year after year. Again ageless and always full of energy. You were blessed to have him for his youthful 97 years...... thinking of you.......
