Dear Daphna, I have just learned the sad news and extend my sincere condolences. First, I must thank you for encouraging me to phone Robert a few months ago. It was great to speak with him, of course, not knowing that it would be my last opportunity. I still recall teaching with him a two section course to honours electrical engineering students 40 years ago. You were fortunate to have such a devoted father that proudly used to bring you in to the department when you were a youngster. I am glad that Irina was able to meet this nicest of colleagues that we all liked so much.

Dear Daphna and Peter and family. I was very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. As you know he was my father's (Imre Meir) closest friend dating back to Budapest, then Jerusalem, then Canada. My father told stories about their escapades and experiences as young bachelors. In more recent years prior to my father's passing he would speak almost daily with "Dunci' as your father was affectionately nicknamed. Your father was very proud of all your childrens and grandchildrens achievements and reported the details to my father. I would then get a call from my father with the same details. I feel like i know your children without having met them! Your father was a gentle, patient and kind friend to my dad for so many years. It feels like a great loss to have that generation now gone. We are left with their stories to tell. I hope you find comfort in your loss. His memory and your moms should be a blessing. with love, gili .

Dear Daphna and family: we empathize with your loss. Although we knew what was coming, it was still a shock to hear that Robert had passed away on a day when I was planning another visit to his bedside. Graciela and I knew Robert for over 50 years, ever since I joined the McGill Mathematics Department, which provided a friendly environment for interactions between colleagues and their families. Both Graciela and our son Bruno had taken courses from him and on my visits he always asked about them. Family was very important to him, both his own and those of others. In recent years I was lucky to share a retirees office with him and I often encountered him keeping his mathematical mind active by trying to solve the problems he had assigned to students in his courses years before. He was sometimes frustrated when he had to consult his own solution sets! He had a strong sense of mathematical rigor and clarity, and for many years was a contributor of basic but challenging questions to the doctoral qualifying examinations, and was not easily fooled by fudged answers. He was also a lover of books and the key figure in building up the collection of the departmental Edward Rosenthall library where a photograph of Robert presided over the space until the books were relocated. When I last was in our shared office I noticed that a classical mathematical textbook by Ostrowski (in German) was lying open on his desk. His interests extended well beyond mathematics and in particular to history. On a recent visit he was pointing to and commenting on books (history and judaica) on the facing bookshelf in English, Hebrew, Hungarian and German.

Dear Daphna, Peter, Naomi and Matty, Eric and Melanie, Elan and family, I have known Robert for almost 50 years. He was my mathematics Professor in my first year at McGill. Being a foreign student, newly arrived from Israel, it was very comforting to have not just a Prof. but also one who quickly became a friend and one of my all time favorite Professors. Interestingly enough, as fate would have it, we became family when my nephew Matty married Naomi, his granddaughter. I always had great admiration for Robert as an academic and as a human being. We will miss him. May his memory be a blessing to your family and to all of us. תנצב״ה.

Eyal Goren - 25 days ago

Dear Daphna and family, I was saddened to hear of Robert's passing. My deepest condolences. I met Robert shortly after arriving at McGill 25 years ago. He was a kind and generous colleague and could always be counted upon for a good advice and insight into the inner workings of the university, something that was invaluable to me as a newcomer. Robert always had a good story to tell, some going back to his days in the army, which I could appreciate having served in the same army. He was a kind and generous person, a real friend of the library and a very smart person; there were always students passing my door on their way to his office, asking not just for math advice but for mentoring. And he was always there for them. He will be sorely missed. -- Eyal.

Dear Daphna, I want to offer my most sincere condolences to you and your family. As you know, I met your Dad when I was an undergraduate student at McGill, over 30 years ago. I remained in touch with him since then. Over all theses years, I kept addressing him as Professor Vermes because I guess, I kept learning from every conversation I had the privilege to have with him. In a sense, he was like a father to me. I will miss him a lot.
