Susan, Robert, and families; please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your inimitable mother. To this day, any time I see lapis lazuli, she springs to mind. And this not only for the necklace she so often wore, but for the piercing intensity of her eyes. She did not suffer fools gladly, but was as quick to shine her smiling, compassionate light on all lucky enough to be in her circle. I can but imagine the tremendous sense of loss you are feeling. She was utterly unique and will be greatly missed. May her memory be a blessing.

Montreal Holocaust Museum - 14 jours

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Miriam (Musia) Schwartz (nee Szpisajzen) z”l, Holocaust survivor and beloved Museum volunteer. Musia was born in 1930 in Tomaszów Lubelski, Poland and raised in Lwow. Her family was forced into the ghetto in 1941. Musia was deported to the Janowska Concentration Camp but convinced soldiers that she was not Jewish and was freed. Thanks to a Christian birth certificate previously obtained by her father, she survived by working as a maid in Warsaw. After the war, Musia was reunited with her aunt, the only member of her family to survive. At the Eschwege and Aglasterhausen Displaced Persons Camps, she made her education a priority. She came to Canada in 1948 through the War Orphans Project and settled in Montreal. In 1950, she married Leon Schwartz, whom she met at the Jewish Public Library. Musia began university studies when her children started school, and she went on to earn a PhD in comparative literature and teach the subject. She also played a formative role at the Montreal Holocaust Museum, interviewing dozens of fellow survivors to ensure the documentation and preservation of their testimonies. Musia’s dedication to the Museum, Holocaust remembrance, and human rights education will never be forgotten. Her remarkable story lives on through those who were fortunate to know her, in her recorded testimony preserved in perpetuity at the Museum, and in the Refugee Boulevard audio tour in which she recalled her early experiences in Montreal. Her testimony is one of the first heard today by visitors at the Montreal Holocaust Museum. It is our privilege and honour to continue sharing her story of survival and resilience with future generations. She has played a key role in educating and inspiring countless individuals to learn more about the history of the Holocaust and to combat all forms of hatred. We will fondly remember Musia’s dedication, intelligence, generosity, and special storytelling ability. The Board of Directors, volunteers, and professional team extend their sincere condolences to the Schwartz family, Susan, Markus, Robert, and Maribeth. May her memory be a blessing and a source of inspiration.
