Donald Lewis Singer

Peacefully in Bowie, Maryland on Thursday, August 31, 2023, after a lengthy illness four days after achieving his goal of celebrating his eighty-eighth birthday on August 27. Son of Lillian Singer who died shortly after giving birth and of the late Herbert and the late Ruth
Singer. Loving husband of Mary McCutchan. Devoted father of Valerie. Cherished grandfather of Jonah and Rafi. Beloved brother and brother-in-law of Judy and Mark Bercuvitz, and David Singer. Dear uncle of Rick Bercuvitz, Jeff Bercuvitz and Stacey Langwick, Debra Bercuvitz and Kris Thomson, and Rachel Hahn. Donald possessed strength of character, incredible determination and fighting spirit, deep convictions, and a personal religiosity. He was given the gift of a phenomenal memory and virtually total recall. He obtained a PhD in history and took great pride as an archivist at the National Archives in Washington D.C. Don, as the archivist of the Second World War Period, aided by Judge Michel Shore, worked arduously for years with a treasure trove of undiscovered boxes of names of those killed by the nazis in the Associate Concentration Camps of Buchenwald, Langenstein, and Zweiberg. Together they sent twenty thousand names to Yad Vashem Memorial Museum in Jerusalem, Israel, to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., as well as to the Red Cross in Geneva Switzerland. Physically he suffered greatly over the last twelve years, but his mental faculties were totally intact until the very end and his fierce determination to see the next day kept him going through his travails. He had run many marathons but after his illness struck, he was confined to a wheelchair. So instead of running goals it became steps taken haltingly, minutes standing, or wheelchair distance unaided. Always one goal ahead. He played chess, participated in events and lectures, read new books, wrote stories, prepared "to do" lists and cursed Republicans until his last day. Funeral service and burial on Monday September 4 at 2 pm, in Amsterdam, New York. Shiva at 5150 Macdonald #1506 on Wednesday 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
