Daniel Amar, Executive Director, Montreal Holocaust Museum - 10 days ago
We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Marcel Tenenbaum z”l, Holocaust survivor and dedicated Museum volunteer. Holocaust education and remembrance were vitally important to Marcel, who spoke to groups of all ages and backgrounds at the Museum. Marcel was born in Brussels in 1935. In August 1942, the Tenenbaums went into hiding on the top floor of a shop that belonged to Marcel’s father’s first employer. For two years, Marcel rarely left the hiding space, and when he did, it was only to go to the corner bookstore with his mother. The family was denounced and arrested in 1944. They were deported to the Mechelen transit camp, missing the last train to Auschwitz by only 72 hours. New generations will continue to discover Marcel’s story through his written memoir, his recorded testimony, the objects he donated to our Museum, and the pedagogical tool based on his experiences during the Holocaust. Every day, as visitors learn about the history of the Holocaust in our permanent exhibition, they discover a wool blanket that was given to Marcel in 1944 in the Mechelen transit camp. Through Marcel’s story and his precious object, they are taught about the diversity of experiences during the Holocaust and the remarkable stories of survivors who rebuilt their lives in Montreal. Marcel will be fondly remembered for his warmth, humour, and profound dedication to our Museum and its mission. He will be deeply missed by his many friends and fellow volunteers at the Museum. Our sincere condolences to Marcel’s beloved family and friends. May his memory be a blessing and a source of inspiration.

Dear Marilyn, Mitchell, Daniel, Raymond and Family, We were heartbroken to hear about the passing of Marcel, who was devoted to Marilyn for the last twenty-five years. He was also very proud of his sons and cherished his grandchildren. We have wonderful memories spent with you, Marilyn and Marcel, going out together at the finest Montreal restaurants, dining at your home for Marcel’s famous shrimp dish, and celebrating many wonderful occasions together. Marcel was always anxious to tell us his new jokes. On a more serious tone, Marcel was a Holocaust survivor and in his retirement years, spent many days going into Schools, both French and English to teach the children about that very important part of history. Marilyn, we hope that all the wonderful memories you have of Marcel will sustain you at this most difficult time. May his memory forever be a blessing. Marcel, You will always be remembered by us. Bev and Harvey

Dear Marilyn, Daniel, Raymond, Mitchell and Family: Sincerest sympathies on your great loss. We met Marcel when he and Marilyn married 25 years ago. They each met their soulmates and both thrived in their new lives together. Marcel was so proud of his sons’ accomplishments and loved to talk about his grandchildren. He was also dedicated to telling his life story and his survival of the holocaust. He did this by speaking to groups of all ages and backgrounds in French and English and finally in the writing of his book “ of Men, Monsters and Mazel” So many great memories of good times together, dining in fine restaurants usually chosen by Marcel and dinners often prepared by him in their home. He will be missed and never forgotten. May he rest in peace. Joyce and Barry

Dear Marilyn and Tenenbaum Family: Please accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of Dr. Marcel. My relationship with Marcel goes back to 1958 when I was accepted into dental school at McGill University when Marcel befriended the incoming potential Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity candidates. He was almost a "Big Brother" to all of us and maintained a relationship with us long after we graduated. Although we left Montreal many years ago and lost contact with him, I still have very fond memories of our past relationship! May he rest in Peace! Edward and Freyda Fellows, Hollywood , Florida.
