Saul was an 'Uncle' to all of us in Freemasonry. His delivery in ritual inspired many of us to emulate his style, but there was still only one Saul who could do it the way he did. He genuinely enjoyed visiting our home for social and Masonic events, and would never turn down a 'Dark & Stormy' when offered. We'll miss you, Saul.

Dear Laura and Beth, my thoughts are with you at this painful time. Laura, I will always remember your father as my « uncle Saul ». When we were both working at VIA Rail, your father played an important role in helping me understand the ties that unite all Jews and the importance of Israel in our lives, before I started my formal education on what it means to be a Jew. He taught me many things that helped me understand and define my Jewish identity. I knew I could always count on his support. I also remember the pleasure we had seeing each other again years later at a Purim party in your congregation. Your father was a Mensch with an amazing Jewish soul. He will remain alive in my heart and my memory. He loved you so much and was so proud of you. May you be spared further sorrow.

Hello World, for those who didn’t know my cousin Sonny, I want you all to know he was an incredibly amazing person who had an unbelievable and full life. He was also the mentsch’s mentsch! In the late /40’s, while still quite young, my cousin, the nice Jewish white boy often sat in as a jazz & boogie-woogie piano player at Rockhead’s Paradise. The stories he told of those days, including getting to know so many of the famous American black performers of the day, and of his friendship with all the regulars and employees of the club, including the black porters of CP Rail who once set him up on a long weekend at Sugar Ray Robinson’s hotel in Harlem for a weekend in “The City”. He could talk of Rufus Rockhead and everyone at that place for HOURS (to my great delight). He was also a long-time and committed Mason who happily and with great pride and gusto gave two of his Masonic brothers from Geneva (close friends of mine) a tour of the lodge in Montreal. And through the /90’s and 2000’s he was a bon-vivant raconteur sharing decades of these and other incredible stories of a life VERY well lived with his first cousin’s son (that would be me) !!! (A big thank you to McDonalds and Tim Hortons on Decarie for many hours of sitting with Sonny at a cost of coffee and croissants 😊) And throughout all this, he also somehow managed to spend much of the past 70 years as a very capable and accomplished accountant with great knowledge of taxes, businesses of ALL kinds, and of course, railroads. There is little moreI could do to share the hours and hours of stories Sonny shared with me about his life other than to share with everyone that he was an incredible guy who will GENUINELY be missed by ALL and EVERYONE who were lucky and blessed enough to know him.
