Dear Joe and Family: We were deeply saddened to hear of Anna's death. Have fond memories of travels together to Chicago SOFA; trips sponsored b.y AACG to cities in US, and Montreal to visit museums, art galleries and collector's homes; of docent tours conducted by Anna at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; of visits to our homes to share our collections; of many meals spent together discussing art, craft, and issues of the day; to sharing a tapestry by Olga de Amaral; the list could go on. We were kindred spirits. who enjoyed sharing our lives with each other. Anna had a warm and caring heart, and was very proud of her family.. She was intelligent and enthusiastically embraced craft art and us as her friends. she and Joe collected art with a discerning eye. She will be missed. As outgoing President of the Association of Volunteer Guides at the MMFA, I would like to express our sincere condolences to the entire Mendel family. We know what a jewel you have all lost in her passing! In her forty years of volunteering at the Museum, having joined in 1983 and President of the Association in 1987-88, she was a steady source of knowledge, of support, and of friendship to her fellow guides. She opened her home to many fundraisers on behalf of the guides, where she gave insightful and entertaining tours of her glass collection, followed by delicious canapés as Anna was a consummate hostess. Even as an associate, or retired, guide in these last years, she participated in our discovery workshops where the guides explore together the works in the Museum's permanent collections. We will miss her. May her memory be a blessing to all of us.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Anna Mendel z”l, Holocaust survivor and long-time supporter of the Montreal Holocaust Museum. Anna was a child survivor from Hungary. Born in 1940, she was 4 years old when the Germans marched into her country. When her family faced roundups, her mother had the foresight to hide Anna in their home. Sadly, her mother was killed on the streets of Budapest in the fall of 1944. Anna was taken in by her father’s sister who lived outside of Budapest and was married to a non-Jew. This arrangement did not last long. After spending time in other homes and orphanages, she was adopted by Piri and Aladar Spiegel, whom she considered her parents. By 1949, Anna and her adopted parents escaped communist Hungary for Paris, France. They immigrated to Canada in 1951. Anna overcame countless challenges building a new life in Canada and learning a new language. Like the thousands of other Holocaust survivors who immigrated to Montreal after WWII, Anna demonstrated profound resilience and refused to be defined by her painful past. In 1996 with the encouragement of her family, Anna made the important decision to record her testimony with our Museum. This was the first time she shared her complete story. Her testimony of loss, survival, and resilience will continue to be transmitted to future generations of students and researchers. Alongside her husband Joe, Anna’s leadership role as a long-time member of the Museum’s President’s Circle demonstrates her profound understanding of the importance of supporting Holocaust remembrance and education. As a supporter, volunteer speaker, and guide, she transformed the lives of all she educated about the Shoah and its human rights legacy. She will be remembered for her remarkable generosity, support of community, love of family, passion for the beauty in the world, and gifted storytelling abilities. The Museum’s Board of Directors, professional team, and volunteers offer our sincere condolences to Anna’s husband Joe, her children, grandchildren, and entire beloved family. May her memory be a blessing and a source of inspiration.

Dearest Joe, Monica, Dean, Sean, and family, it is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to your beloved Anna. As Stephen and I watched the tributes this morning on YouTube, her life story took my breath away in its depth and beauty. Like many others, I took an immediate liking to Anna as an artist and art historian. I knew she understood the creative spirit and the intuitive drive to create something out of nothing. We spoke of these things on more than one occasion, and I always came away with gratitude that she supported the efforts of the creative voices that spun silica into objects of beauty. When we visited her home some years ago, we walked around her apartment and talked about the glasswork piece by piece that she and Joe so proudly displayed. As benefactors and patrons of the arts, they generously contributed to our collective cultural heritage. As Camille Pissaro once said, "Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where others see nothing." May Godspeed, dearest Anna, and thank you for the legacy that you left. Anna was a great woman. She had done so much with Joe for the glass art artists and community, here in Montreal and abroad. Her dedication was with passion and love. Anna usually knitting or reading, and imparting her vast knowledge of glass and art with so much enthusiasm.
