In the decades that I have known your father I never saw him not happy. He was always telling jokes, yes corny puns sometimes, but his joy was remarkable. And his happiness was infectious so you felt better after being with him and found yourself smiling too. I understand that he spent his last day enjoying music and singing along, being who he was ; always happy. Remarkable Lionel thanks for the joy and laughter you brought to all of us who knew you. Sending love to the family Judy

Dear Helen, Marilynne, Cheryl & family. I am sorry to hear about your father's passing, and yet, even as the sadness creeps in, a smile emerges as I remember his smiling, grinning face. As a kid, new to Montreal and getting to know my Montreal family, I remember vividly his joyous presence at family gatherings and Jewish holidays. What a treat to have Lionel and the Malkin clan dilute some of the Sinai intensity! He was like a magnet for me ... exuding joy and love... you wanted to sit next to him. The stories, the jokes, the laughter, the kindness in his eyes... got me every time, as a kid and beyond, through the years. May his memory and legacy warm your heart in this time of mourning. So much love.

Uncle Liney and Auntie Adele were such welcoming host, always open to sharing their traditions and delicious food with Trish and I. We were always greeted with a hello pussy cat, a big kiss and often a ten dollar bill slipped into our hands (pretty exciting for a young girl). I will always remember starting my first job and Uncle Liney sharing wise advise, telling me I should be first in and last out, to work hard and impress my boss. He was such a kind man and his memory will live on forever. With love Maggie and Craig

Barbara Brooks - 25 days ago
To the entire family. So sorry for your loss. I remember Lionel well. I was really impressed by his warmth, heartfuness and smile. He was very 'low' when he was going to retire. He was sitting in his office sharing how fearful he was, with me, most unusual. I told him that he had no idea of the incredible new events that would unfold in his life and bring him joy and the new projects he would be involved in, and to look forward to all this newness. One day, I told him, you will look back and realize the truth of this. He appreciated this feedback. Anyway I am pretty sure there was no time in his life to regret retiring. May his neshama have a most wondrous, light-filled spiritual aliyah. Barbara Brooks, daughter of Diane and Josh Brooks Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android Show more

When Helen and I became fast friends almost 50 years ago, I met her most amazing father, Lionie. He had an effusive zest for life -- a fount of joy and endless positivity. The glass was not just half full; it was spilling over. He was always joking, kibbitzing, laughing, singing, dancing and welcoming to all who crossed paths with him. He adored his late wife, Adele, his three fabulous daughters and his wonderful grandchildren. He often commented that this was all he needed in life to be happy. I saw Lionie many times over the years and never heard him say a negative word or appear down. Just the opposite. He was a human anti-depressant. Simply hanging out with him could give you a contact-high. In addition to building a successful business he did volunteer work well into his eighties including delivering meals-on-wheels to veterans, many of whom were younger than him. I was so lucky to have known him for so long. The world sure could use a lot more Lionie’s. I raise a toast to him. L’chaim.
