Dear Tom and Norma Jean, and the rest of the family, please forgive the lateness of this message, I was out of town and learned of her passing just today. Shifra was a ray of light, I will never forget her beautiful smile and friendly, loving presence. My condolences to you and to the extended family for this deep loss. May the special memories you have of her always be a blessing.

Our deepest sympathies to the Alt family, especially Tom and Norma-Jean, her step-son and daughter-in-law, on the unexpected passing of Shifra. Shifra was well known for her love of family and Jewish life. She truly embraced and spoke often of her extended family who lived in Canada, Australia, Hungary, and Israel, where she lived for several years. We first met Shifra and her late husband David at a social function many years ago and our paths crossed often when they wintered in Florida. The Shifra we knew was someone who loved to travel, enjoyed lively political discussions, and reading voraciously. Shifra will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew her. I’ve known Shifra over 55 years and we became very close friends like sisters. Nothing was done unless we discussed it beforehand. We relied on each other and discussed everything. We worked together at Talmud Torah and then decided to go to Concordia University and get our degrees together. She was a very positive person, all around person, kind and compassionate. Shifra was a very loyal friend and I will miss her dearly.

To everyone near and far, who were close with Shifra… We are so saddened about Shifra’s sudden passing. She taught Danny when he was in Hebrew day school, and he talked about how cool & terrific a teacher she was. We will always remember Shifra for her smile, vibrant personality, young-at-heart attitude, and unforgettably for how quickly she could get through the Passover seder in her beautiful, Israeli-accented Hebrew. Norma Jean, Tom and Susie - how lucky for Shifra to have you help her out when she needed help the most and to my brother who had the honour of visiting with Shifra. We will miss you, Shifra. With love Dania, Danny, Warren & Kaitlyn, Zach & Kaylee and Kenny.

My deepest condolences to Roni. We met at Shifra luncheon a few months ago. I am the small Italian lady who met Shifra at the Jewish Y and became close. I was shocked to hear of her passing. We were about the same age, and I expected to go before her. I spent a memorable afternoon with her after having lunch at my place and enjoying a long walk. I would love to know the circumstances of Shifra's passing. She will always be in my heart.

My deepest condolences to all of Shifra’s family and friends, with special thoughts for Ronit, Tyler, and Lauren. Through Roni, I have known Shifra for so long, it feels like forever. I remember her smile and laughter, her kindness and hospitality ( and absolutely delicious chicken soup!). She was like an aunt to us all, and will be missed. She has given so much to so many in her life; I know that her memory will be for a blessing.

Elaine and Mitchell Brownstein Irma Friedman - 28 days ago

Shifra was my mom Irma's happy, always joking and laughing friend. When I was a teenager and Shifra would come over to our house I was always drawn to join the conversation and what I thought might be a quick hello, would turn into hours of laughter and fun. She always knew how to make you feel good and turn any situation into something to laugh about. As the years went by she was always having a good time at city activities and continued to have that special smile and positive spirit doing all things to enjoy life and stay healthy. It is very hard to believe she has left us. My mom Irma, wife Elaine, mother-in law Miriam and I are so saddened by this loss and extend our deepest condolence to all her family and friends. Her memory will remain with us and remind us, by her example, what it means to enjoy every moment of life.

Dear Tom and Norma Jean, we were saddened to hear the news of Shifra’s passing. We cherished the many great winters in Florida’s Warm Mineral Springs that we shared with your late Father Dudi and Shifra, even if the sulphur in the lake could never quite be rinsed off after a long day of soaking in the rejuvenating waters. We always enjoyed the times you two joined Dudi and Shifra in Sarasota to get a break from the harsh Montreal winters. Shifra’s love of swimming was legendary, even when Alligators, albeit small ones, were spotted in the lake. She exercised religiously. We remember Shifra telling us how fortunate she was in finding a ready-made family, complete with a handsome husband, a great son and a thoughtful daughter in-law, along with many other wonderful Alt Family members. We’re glad we kept in touch over the intervening years after Dudi died and had hoped to see Shifra again in Sarasota, but it was not meant to be. Shifra was a kind woman and enjoyed her family life to the fullest. We are glad that you two were able to support her through her biggest challenge, Covid 19. We especially enjoyed seeing the lovely photo that is on Norma Jean’s Facebook site, of Shifra, smiling quietly, surrounded by those 50 long stemmed pink roses that you two sent her for her birthday last year. Shifra loved flowers. That is the Shifra we will always remember, smiling quietly, enjoying the simple pleases of life. Yehi zichra baruch. Miriam and Michael Wallenberg

I remember her as a wonderful energetic teacher. I loved playing "Shimon omer" in her class. Somehow, whenever Simon told us to touch our "tuchus", the principal would walk in and the class would break out into hysterical laughter.

To all the members of Shifra's family, my sincere condolences on Shifra's unexpected death. Although I live in Toronto and she in Montreal we were close friends and I always looked forward to our long conversations. She was always cheerful and had a very optimistic outlook on life. I am certainly going to miss speaking to her. She loved history and was very knowledgeable about many things. Her late husband Duddie once said to me "she is sure one smart lady". He was right.
