Dear Josh and Martin. The news of Tessa's passing only reached me now,. Martin's mother used to maintain a tremendous social network among family, a duty Tessa took up, but we're all so scattered now. Her passing is such a shock. Tessa. Martin and I being much younger than our other first cousins, we sort of formed a sub-circle in the extended Silvensky family, with lots of memories of visits, holiday dinners and simchas. Tessa was a great lady, like her mother. She married a wonderful guy, and like him, she has passed too soon. She loved Josh so much and was his biggest advocate and was devoted to her bother and his wonderful children. She was a doting aunt, She was my comms link to family in Montreal, and for that and so much more, I'll miss her greatly.

Dear Josh We just found out and were shocked by passing of your mother Tessa. She left a legacy for many of her students to follow. We remember the days at Westpark where you and Leslie almost every weekend where involved in chess tournaments and the one summer you both played baseball together. Both your parents were warm & kind people and the world was better place with them in it. She will be sorely missed. Leslie passes on his condolences and is sorry for your loss. They were both very PROUD of you for your accomplishments and the man you have turned out to be.

Mrs. Berger was the type of teacher you meet and she changes your life for the better. She was my Grade 7, 10, 11 English teacher at WIC. I am so thankful that I was placed in her Grade 7 class as it profoundly impacted my high school experience and the rest of my life. I remember going to the caf to get her coffee, being called the "overachiever" and her helping me through Shakespearian plays. When I fell ill, she was kind and accommodating. But she was otherwise tough, in the best way. She pushed me to be a better writer and a better person. I was always happy to run into her at Maxicolor, IGA, WestSpa or Rockaberries'. Though she would later deny this, I remember her asking me if I was going into CEGEP Sciences because writing wasn't my strong suit. After I finished my 120-page Master's thesis, I e-mailed it to her, since I went into sciences and still had to write so much. We had a good laugh over it. Josh, you were your mom's absolute pride and joy. Though we only met once, when you came to visit our class, I like I know you, from all the things you mom told us. She would always brag about your accomplishments. May her memory be a blessing.

Dear Josh My heart still weeps as I mourn the loss of your mother and my dearest and oldest friend. Her impact on her many students speaks volumes as witnessed in this memorial book. It is her legacy. She leaves this world far too soon but a far better place for her incomparable influences on generations of students, and equally her unconditional love of her family and friends. Yes my heart is broken but I am eternally grateful for her lifelong friendship. May her memory sustain you throughout your life’s journey and may it be an everlasting blessing for you, your loving family and her many cherished friends.

Mrs. Berger was the kind of teacher you don’t come across too often. I think what I remember most is how smart she was about so many things. She gave me confidence. She saw the best and the potential in all of her students. She was fiercely protective of us. She loved spending time with her students. Her smile was never bigger when she was either talking about her son or looking at him. May her memory be a blessing. Mrs. Berger, I will never forget you.

Kyle Nayman - 25 days ago

I had the privilege of being one of Mrs. Berger's students at WIC. She was a lovely, dynamic person and a great teacher who really cared about her students. Not only did she have a terrific sense of humor, she also taught us a lot! My wife, Laura, and I also know her family and extend our sincerest condolences to them during this difficult time. May Mrs. Berger's memory forever be a blessing. Kyle Nayman and Laura Abitbol

Tessa(zl) was my colleague at West Hill High before she moved to WIC. Active in the English Department and in school affairs. May her memory be a blessing for all who knew her.

Joni - 25 days ago

I felt at home in her class. I remember Janis and I switched classes to see if she would notice, since we're twins. I recall that she wrote alot of notes on the board. I did enjoy history more because of her personality and because she was teaching it. Years later, I have used some of her teaching techniques in my own classrooms. I remember Mrs. Berger fondly. You could talk to her like a friend. Condolences to you, her family. A sad day, but it will stay in my memory that a wonderful history teacher leaves us on an historically important day for Canada.-- July 1st.

My sincerest condolences to the Berger and Selvin families. I was a student of Mrs. Berger in the late 70’s. She was one of my favourite teachers. She taught us so much and she left a lasting impression on me and all my classmates. I share stories of her English classes to this day. May she rest in peace.

Arielle Dascal - 26 days ago

My sincerest condolences to the entire family. I was a student of Mrs. Berger back in 2014, my graduating year at WIC. I remember hoping throughout my entire High School career that I would have the opportunity to be in her class. I am so thankful I did. Her classroom was adorned with class photos dating back six or seven years from when I had her. You could just tell that she truly cared and loved for each of her students. To this day, I tell stories to my own students from my time with Mrs. Berger. I still use the techniques she taught me, and share them with my own students. Her legacy lives on with every student she has ever taught.

Liane Alexander - 26 days ago

My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs Berger. I was a student of hers, way back in the late 70’s/early 80’s. I can still hear her voice, and her laughter. She made English class an event worth looking forward to. I have no doubt she will be missed by many May she rest in a peace 💙

Sigh, Mrs. Berger.... You were the first teacher I had that first morning on my first day of WIC back in August 1987. I think it was your first year at WIC too. You made me feel comfortable and happy, you made me laugh (and got me in trouble) and throughout the years you were a great teacher and friend to our whole grade. After graduating I enjoyed coming to visit WIC and our conversations. Your wit, humour, happiness and genuine care for us, your students, was amazing. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Berger's family and close friends.

Mrs. Berger was truly a beautiful soul and may she Rest In Peace. I can only pray she knows the impact she has had on me, and in giving me the confidence in grade 7 to do more than I ever imagined. I consider myself so lucky to have ended up in her class as I started off my WIC journey. To this day, 14 years after having had her as a teacher, I think of how much she believed in me and all she taught me. She will truly be missed, my deepest condolences and sympathies to her loved ones.

I have wondered why Tessa's passing is so painful for so many people of my age group on this message board. I think it is because she was a powerful, positive force during our most memorable years. This is certainly true for me. She was central to my childhood and education. She and my mother were close friends. My mother introduced Tessa to my father's friend Joe and the rest is history. Josh and I were born less than a year apart and we became childhood friends. Tessa was a 'cool' mom. She hung out with us during sleepovers. She played Nintendo with us for hours together with Josh and Cooler (the 'Hoont'). She spoiled Josh and me with new books, Lego sets, Magic cards and innumerable other toys and games. She cheered for Josh and me at chess tournaments, debate competitions and baseball games. She was also my teacher for two years in high school, where she taught me to value poetry, Shakespeare and the power of words. She helped me learn to write (as I feel her reviewing this text too..). Later on, she continued to cheer for my success upon my departure Montreal and when I started a family of my own. To Josh and the Selvin family: Please accept our condolences for the loss of this most exceptional person. "I wish that her memory, instead of an agony, will yet be a sad sweet feeling in your heart" (Lincoln)

Philippe Marsolais - 27 days ago

My sincere condolences to you Josh and to your family, For many, many years Tessa (Mrs. Berger) would be called upon to go to the podium at WIC's graduation to give the final benediction to all students. Her role transcended the one of an educator, she was a beacon shining her light on all of us. She would end her speech the same way every year by saying "graduating class of (year), we salute you!". Today, as we are all saddened by this news, it is the time for all of us to salute her.

Dear Josh and family - I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Berger (as she will forever be to me) was an incredible teacher. She really got to know her students, encouraged us, pointed out our strengths (what others might have deemed flaws), and set us straight when we were mistaken with a sense of humour. I am so grateful to have had her as a teacher and debating coach. As others have said, I know that she is one of the reasons I pursued my passions.

Dear Josh, I am deeply saddened and so very sorry for the loss of your mom. I was lucky enough to meet her and you and your father through Bunny some 20 years ago, and I have such fond memories of all the times we spent at dinners and brunches and our epic girls against boys Trivial Pursuit matches. Tessa was always so kind to me and I just loved her quick wit and sense of humour. Watching her and Bunny together gave me many occasions to sit back and laugh. I even wrote a piece of fiction that has them both in it based on their relationship as teachers. I never tired of hearing the stories from when they taught in the same school. She always spoke of you with such love and she was so very proud of you. My deepest condolences to you and your family on this untimely and unimaginable loss. It’s just too soon. I will never forget her and will miss her. - Shelley

She taught my daughters and I know her passion for teaching resulted in so many students' passion for learning! She was truly one of the rare gems! May her memory be a blessing.

Nomaan Ahmed - 29 days ago

My sincerest sympathies to Joshua & family. Joshua, I never met you, but I can probably recite your life story based on how often Mrs. Berger spoke of you; it was obvious how proud she was. It isn't often you find a teacher that has such an impact that her lessons and sayings continue to echo far beyond the confines of the classroom. Mrs. Berger was one such teacher, and I was lucky enough to have her for not one, but two years. I'll miss being on the receiving end of Mrs. Berger's legendary wit, usually filled with clever literary references that would only hit you on the car ride home. Even now, I don't think there's a single one of her students that doesn't distinctly remember "Mrs. Berger's English Class". The outpouring of kind words is a clear indication of the lasting impact she had - please accept my sincerest condolences.

So sorry for your loss, Josh and family. Mrs. Berger was such a formative person in so many young students' lives. She always treated her students like adults, never pandering, never putting up with bulls**t. She was passionate and fierce and taught me how much language matters. Words matter. She might be the reason I became a writer. Years after I graduated WIC, I wrote a book. Shortly after it was published, I got a letter from Tessa with a photocopy of a story I had written at age 5 tucked into the envelope. She remembered it from the Westpark newsletter. She told me that she always knew I would be a writer. I still have her letter and that photocopied story. I'll hang onto it a little tighter now. We were all so lucky to know her.

I remember Mrs. Berger from the late 1980s at WIC. She had the misfortune of teaching our boys class of moral ed. We were loud and obnoxious, but Mrs. Berger handled us so well. I still remember how she would always keep her cool no matter how bad we behaved, no matter how we spoke to her. She was a great teacher and I feel sadness that she's gone way too young. Condolences to everyone mourning her loss.

Caralee Salomon - 30 days ago

I am so sad to read this news. Although we lost touch years ago, memories of my time in Mrs. Berger's class are among my fondest high school memories. She was offbeat, unapologetic and authentic, which allowed a quiet, awkward teen like me to find my own voice and use it. I can draw a pretty straight line in my life from our grade seven English class to my first love for words and writing and journalism, and from my time on her debate team to my current career in law. And I can't remember why anymore, but she nicknamed me 'Hermione' over a decade before that was a name on every teenager's lips. Rest in peace, Mrs. Berger.

I had the privilege of having Mrs. Berger as a debating coach and Moral Ed teacher in the late 80s at WIC. She was an outspoken coach with incredible wit, a and a sharp mind. She joked around calling my then boyfriend and I an old married couple. 25 plus years later when we returned to WIC’s open house with our son I was so excited to see her and catch up and show her that we did turn into that couple! Fondly remembered.

It ended up shaping my future career. My condolences to Mrs. Berger's family for their loss.

There are so many words that come to mind when I think of Tessa. She was a devoted and caring teacher who dedicated her career to promoting the love of reading, writing, and especially oral expression. She loved to laugh and, more than that, she loved to make others laugh with her witty humour. Mrs. Berger will always be fondly remembered at WIC and it was an honour and a privilege to work with her. As her students will confirm, the place where she shone the brightest was within the four walls of her classroom. My condolences to the family and to all who knew her.

Dear Joshua, I am so sorry for your loss. West Island College was a big part of our lives, and your mom, aka Mrs. Berger, was a big part of WIC. Your mother was a legend at school, much loved and respected by her students and colleagues. Tessa will long remain alive in the hearts and minds of all those she touched particularly by employing her quick wit to laugh and tease her wards. I send you now a virtual hug and look forward to see you again, perhaps at a WIC reunion, to give you a real one.

It's hard to put into words Mrs. Berger's impact as a teacher, as so many of my fondest high school memories take place in her classroom--and I know she has had an equal impact on the lives of so many students. I will remember her for imparting and inspiring in me a love for English, and a sense of confidence navigating the wonderful world of reading and writing. Her signature deep voice passionately reading aloud from Shakespeare's Macbeth stands out all these years later as a particularly cherished memory. And as a debating coach who taught us "how to win arguments against our parents", Mrs. Berger was a close mentor over my high school years. By partnering me in Grade 7 with the person who would become my best friend to this day, Mrs. Berger has truly had a lasting impact on the course of my life. With deep gratitude for the privilege of having been Mrs. Berger's student, my sincerest condolensces to her family.

Her army of super close friends are all an example of how she touched everyone's life.We always said at any given opportunity I bet Tessa would have a good one to say!..we are all selfish mortals wanting something good to last forever.this happened way to soon. Tessa you were more than good you ,touched everyones lives. your legacy will live forever.

Her lessons are relevant to me to this day. My sincere condolences to her son and family. What a special person she was.

I have such wonderful memories of Mrs. Berger from Wagar High School in the 1970s. I fondly recall her radiant smile and the warmth she exuded. We truly adored her. Reading here that she was just nine years older than us, I now realize that she must just have been starting out in her career, and that there was yet another generation of students who was blessed , as were we, to have had her as their beloved teacher. May you derive comfort from knowing the impact she had on so many young lives.

Dear Josh and family, Mrs Berger left such a mark on me and many others that even with the pressure of bigger assignments I kept remembering her famous words “the essay is your friend”. She made every class interesting and brought the material to life. I felt lucky to have had her as a teacher. Stay strong in this difficult time and know she has touched so many.

Leehi Yona - about 1 month ago

Not a week goes by without me imparting some of Mrs. Berger’s wisdom: “In life, there will always be someone smarter than you, more experienced than you... whatever good quality it is you think you have, there will always be someone who has more of it than you. What matters then is your character and who you are, your values. Focus on that.” Mrs. Berger was more than my high school English teacher. I graduated in 2010. We still kept in touch over a decade later, chatting by phone when I was away (she’s the reason I applied to schools in the US) and would get brunch when I was back in town. She was fiercely witty, caring about her students and believing in our potential, when oftentimes we didn’t even see it in ourselves. She made her students create colourful autobiographical posters that she plastered on all four classroom walls, posters that stayed from the moment you were in Secondary I all the way through your graduation. The classroom became our own little community, where we read The Glass Castle, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew... every Shakespearean play. And of course, who would forget that she would train her youngest students to reply in unison, “You’re not old, Mrs. Berger!!” any time she or another teacher would mention her age. Mrs. Berger also coached the debating team. I was, for the record, a terrible debater. I was a shy, debilitatingly self-conscious tween. But Mrs. Berger taught me to speak up, always letting me know with a knowing wink and a twinkle in her eye that she knew I was capable of more than I ever thought was possible. I can’t believe she’s gone. I truly can’t. I don’t feel like I’m done learning from her. I wish she was around to chastise me for being a perfectionist student. I hope she knows the impact she had on me, and on so many of her students. On my wall is a plaque she gave me when I graduated from college in 2016. Made to look like a high school award, at the bottom is inscribed, “From Tessa Berger, who taught her and now learns from her.” Leave it to her to assign me homework. I hope to be even a fraction of the kind of teacher and mentor Mrs. Berger was for me, even to just one person.

Dear Josh, our sincerest condolences on the untimely passing of your dear mom. Tessa and of course your father and you, are at the center of so many wonderful memories over the past 30+ years. Her sharp sense of humour is legendary, and combined with your father's notorious ability to instigate made being with them a lively time. Her love of teaching and amazing ability to hold her students attention and actually have them love to be taught by her, and remember her, and keep in touch after they graduated is the mark a remarkable woman.
