Mr Emile Cohen - 20 days ago

I came to know him a few years ago . I introduced myself to him following meeting a researcher on Iraqi Jews, Aline Schlaepfer who praised him fully . We discovered that we shared similar ideologies and he was pleased that I knew his friends of old like Nissim Rejwan, Shimon Balass and Sasson Somekh. We corresponded and talked on the phone a number of times. He was always very pleasant and a gentleman of the first order and was held in high esteem by all those who knew him or read his books; a great intellectual and a kind and gentle person who deserves all respect. My condolences to the family and I share their sorrow and grief for the loss of a very lovely person. May he rest in peace. We may have lost the man but his memory lingers for a long time.

Dear Emmanuel and Family, I’m so sorry for your great loss. Words can’t sufficiently touch on your father’s rich legacy as a literary power of community pride or as a true gentle man. I will remember his kind and caring manner and the special way he went about life with a sincere pleasantness to everything, as if to epitomize his namesake to high merit. It struck me as a teen and someone who took interest in words and pen that he often asked my mom how I’m doing or that he extended his contact to me through her, though I was too shy to approach. We smiled to one another at synagogue services and the times we did connect, he approaching me, I deeply appreciated his tender praise with encouragement that I continue to shape and honor my writer voice. It meant something that he cared enough to affirm me. Revisiting him when reading his works now will always be an experience that is both honorary and new. What I value and most cherish of your father’s example though is showing me how strongly the signature of a good and gentle heart in a person can drive literature and outlast any memory we wish to shape more powerfully than anything. May his deep and loving richness to all in your family always warm your hearts and serve for a blessing. You have my heartfelt condolences.

We have all lost a giant of a man whose intellect, compassion, writing and oratory urged us all to be the best we could be. My personal connection to him was through the Jewish Public Library, an institution to which he was personally committed. May his memory be a blessing. His life certainly was.

Jeff Mooallem - 22 days ago

To Emmanual and family, my condolences to all of you for the passing of Naim. He was the cousin of my late father, Jamil Mooallem. As a young man, I was introduced to his book Adieu Babylon by my father's late brother Fuad, and attribute that book to my continued learnings of our heritage. The story's sensibilities of cultural exploration, migration, and continuity left an indelible impression on me to this day. I later understood it to be a reflection of the author’s personal journey, which made it more real somehow. He provided us all with a literary identity for generations. I met him a couple of times at the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue and enjoyed our conversation. No doubt, he will be missed by our community.

Dear Eammanuel and Family, please accept our sincere condolences. Naim was afreind to all and the pride of our community. May his memory always keep you warm.

BDHE

Rest In Peace, Naim. It was an honour & privilege to know you. I will cherish all my memories of the time we spent together at your apartment on St. Urbain discussing life. I recall with great affection your visits to my parents’ house in TMR to sample to sample my mother Evelyne’s plao al-tbit. You were always a gentleman & a scholar. The world - and especially the Babylonian community - is poorer without you. Condolences to Emmanuel, Annie & your family.

What more can one say about a great man who has left us that hasn’t already been said, written, or published about him. A distinguished, honoured, yet humble exemplary human being. What a pleasure it was to listen to his conferences or to simply exchange with him when he arrived to synagogue on Shabbat and gave me a hug before taking his seat next to mine. After services our conversations were pursued more fully during Kiddush together with his wife Annie Z’L. He spoke so highly and so proudly of his adored son Emanuel. To Emanuel and the Kattan family, please accept my most sincere condolences and may his memory be a blessing to you, to his readers, to his friends and colleagues and to the entire community at large. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet.

Naim Z"L was a real tower of our Community. His loss is very painful to all of us who were in contact with him. He was a warm person who cared about the community. I met him for the first time in Ottawa when he came to talk to the Jewish Community about the Jews of Iraq. When he heard my family name, he asked me about my cousin who was his classmate in Baghdad at "The Alliance Israelite School". H e told me that he cannot forget his childhood friends. We all feel sorry and very sad. Our deepest sympathy to his son and all his family and friends. May he rest in peace in Paradise. Lydia and Sami Sourani

It is with a very heavy heart that I learned that Naïm went to Paris and the Covid happened. I wrote him that I got a chance to read "N'aie pas peur de la nuit." and that it is my hunch that it is about Annie o.b.m. He said, "Yes, it is." He called me from the rehabilitation centre in Paris. Over the months I tried writing and calling to no avail. I am so grateful for his voice over the phone. Because the sound of it helps me through this pain of learning about his passing. Naïm Kattan put wind under my wings after my father passed away and his memoir was left to me to deliver to the publishers. May your memory be a blessing for ALL of us, Naïm. You are a gift to humanity. Emmanuel, you are a beautiful gift to us all, because you embody so much of the substance and stature of your beloved father. May your family be blessed each day by what your father left behind. With love, Sandra Koukou...Co-Author and Editor, THE BOOK, A Humble Quest Into The Hebrew Scriptures

Gladys Mooallem - 23 days ago

It is with great sorrow I received the news of the passing of the most beloved and respected Naim Kattan. Naim being the cousin of my late Jamil-Joseph Mooallem, I heard a lot about him in Israel. I met him with great admiration when I immigrated to Montreal. He was greatly honoured twice in our synagogue with dinner celebration, a third time recently with luncheon by Sandra Koukou for the vernissage of his beautiful painting that she completed. It is presently hanging on the wall of the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, Montreal with great pride. I read Adieu Babylon in English and French with great admiration. My deep condolences to the dear son Emmanuel, whom he cherished so much and the entire intellectual and loving family. Naim's contribution to humanity is priceless. Gladys Peress Mooallem, Women's Learning Group (WLG) Coordinator of the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, Montreal

Edmond Elbaz

It is not just the Iraqi Jewish community that must endure the ineffable loss of the passing of this intellectual giant. His absence will surely be felt by all defenders of liberty and human dignity. I had the great privilege of hearing him speak on many occasions. His was a voice of moral clarity, a clarion call for all those who still believe in and uphold classical liberal values. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet to the bereaved family (may you be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem) and to entire family of Iraqi Jews whose crucible of exile and suffering was so eloquently crystalized in the works of this great man. Philosopher, humanist, scholar, writer, the preeminent man of letters of the modern-day Iraqi-Jewish community, may his memory be blessed and serve as a source of pride, strength and inspiration to all his successor standard-bearers of a more just world. Adieu Naïm Kattan.

Sandra Rafman - 24 days ago

To his family, friends, Montrealers, the Jewish community, the world community. This is a most painful loss for us all. Informed by the Jewish community, the 2,500 year-old Iraqui tradition, by France, we in Quebec were the lucky ones to receive such a civilized and refined scholar, author, pluralistic in his views and eager to build a society for all. Let us mourn by remembering Naïm Kattan's messages and meanings.
