So sorry to hear of Miri's passing. I first met Miri in my capacity of Principal of Herzliah High School (Beutel/St. Laurent). I would meet with her at HFS/HA to discuss with her and her students at the afternoon Hebrew School about the Judaica program at Herzliah. This was a program designed for students who did not attend a Jewish elementary day school but had some knowledge of Hebrew. Miri's students were very well prepared. Some chose to come to Herzliah and through hard work graduated `in five years. I also had to be with Miri on a 2 week educational mission with Jewish educators to Israel. It was there that I met her husband. She was a joy to work and learn with. May the family know no further sorrow. Sincere condolences.

Dear Tzvi , Daphna,Daliah and Families I was so sorry to hear of your loss . Many people come through the world and barely make a ripple. However, in reading the condolence notes that have already been published above, one can see the profound impact that Miri Flakowicz had upon her students and the world of Jewish education. The students and the parents have already said it all and that is the greatest tribute by which her memory lives on. I would like to add what a privilege it was to work with such a pioneer in Jewish education. A founding teacher of Hebrew Foundation School ;she was a most creative ,energetic , educator and administrator . There is no doubt that during her career at Hebrew Foundation School and Hebrew Academy ,she literally impacted thousands of lives.Truth be told, when she retired from HFS, she was irreplaceable. Additionally, beyond the walls of HFS, and H.A, she impacted hundreds of schools and thousands more students through the Jewish studies and Hebrew language curricula that she helped author . There is a measure of comfort in knowing that even though she is no longer with us physically, the texts that she helped develop serve as her legacy for yet another generation of students. As we all prepare to light our Channukiah tonight, we can think of Miri as the Shammash who shared her light and lit up all of the lives around her. Miri was a star educator and just as the light of the stars is thousands of years old; her light will continue to be eternal and shine upon your family and the world from her place on high. With my deepest sympathies and condolences Rabbi Zev Lanton

I have wonderful memories of Morah Flakowicz. She was stern but so effective. In my HFS graduation year, we were celebrating Israel's 40th birthday. She was front and centre when it came to planning the celebration as school, as well as the classroom learning, and it has remained a vivid memory all these years. Her passion for teaching Hebrew and Israeli culture was (and remains) unforgettable. Zichrona L'vracha

Dear Zvi, Daphna, Daliah and Family, With great sadness we heard about your loss of Miri ז״ל. For us she a dear and respected colleague and a thoughtful, creative and knowledgeable Jewish educator and an invaluable member of the TaL SeLA writing team. She brought to each unit we developed her outstanding pedagogic skills and teaching experience, original methodology and suggestions of activities that made the difference between good and excellent. She was extremely punctual and reliable. Tova fondly remembers that she used to walk with her on the community sponsored March to Jerusalem and used the opportunity to develop creative ideas for units in development. We also remember her pedantic and artistic design concepts which made each page instructionally effective and visually attractive. Above all she was a good friend! We will miss her! יהי זיכרה ברוך

We, the parents of the first graduating class of HFS, owe a great debt to Miri. We all took a chance sending our children to a brand new, as yet untested, school and, boy, did it pay off. Our kids had the great advantage of graduating with only 10 students - they were a close knit group who cared for each other and became high achievers. That would not have happened without the wisdom and warmth of a very special teacher. Miri was everything a parent could hope for and more. My heartfelt sympathy to her family. Charna Foxman

Daliah, Daphna, Tzvi and families... I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I've known your mom my whole life - from our 30+ years of friendship and my days at HFS ... When your mom asked "how are you?" she truly cared and waited for an answer... I remember how she always tried to be a part of "the girls" and get the gossip from our nights out...When I think of your mom, I always feel the warmth and love that came genuinely from her heart. A true gem. My sincerest condolences to all of you...May her memory live forever in your hearts... Sending much love... BDE
