1969: Barry and I spent a lot of time on his bedroom floor playing with our “Man On the Moon” cards. Every once in a while we’d look up to see Ernie with his “perma-smile” looking at us and saying something like “having a good time, Boys?” and then, once a day, Freda would ask something like “hungry, boys?” I learned quickly that that wasn’t so much a question as a strong hint. I also learned that although she didn’t have the Ernie R “perma-smile”, she truly had a heart of gold. Fast forward 12 years and Freda was my prof at Concordia. I thought Organizational Behaviour would be a really simple blow-off course, but NOT with Freda. I ended up working my derriere off, but boy did I learn a ton of stuff I did not expect to learn. Freda was a warm, loving, really brilliant force of nature. She and Ernie were two awesome people, both of whom will be missed! She was a strong, intelligent, joyful person who tried to make the world a better place with all of her different initiatives and jobs through many decades. Dear cousins, I was sad to hear about your mother and my Aunt Freda's passing. However it did bring back the fantastic memories of our shared childhood around the Gans family events. The seders stick out as the most memorable with your mother and Auntie Yetta talking away as our Zeide went meticulously through  the haggadah not missing a single word and the spirited discussions that stuck to the tradition of 2 Jews 3 opinions. Then when the seders were moved to your parents house she(and your father, always a team) helped keep the tradition and our family together.  As your mother went on to pursue her academic interests we got to share in what she was studying and learning from it when she would come over to our house and school her older brother.... I'd like to think that they are together once again, leading the square dancing troupe in heaven. May you all be comforted among the mourners of Zion.
